The Weapon of a Jedi: A Luke Skywalker Adventure, a book geared towards younger readers, saw its release as a component of the Journey to Star Wars: The Force Awakens series of books. Penned by Jason Fry, this novel chronicles the exploits of Luke Skywalker in the period between Star Wars: Episode IV A New Hope and Star Wars: Episode V The Empire Strikes Back. Disney–Lucasfilm Press published it on September 4, 2015, and it spans 192 pages. Nestlé produced an animated comic adaptation of the novel as part of a licensed Star Wars promotional effort. To view the animation, one must visit the Nestlé Comics website and input a digital code found on Nestlé cereal boxes. Furthermore, in 2017, a comic adaptation in four parts, written by Alec Worley and illustrated by Ruairí Coleman, appeared in the German Star Wars Magazin.
The narrative unfolds between the events of Star Wars: A New Hope and Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back, depicting Luke's unexpected arrival on a strange planet. There, he's compelled to harness the Force to rescue a young girl, all while fighting for his survival in a perilous confrontation with a peculiar new adversary.
Jason Fry, the author, expressed that writing about Luke Skywalker was "a huge thrill and an awesome responsibility," and he also mentioned that he believed "he's eluded some authors." After finishing the book, he felt an even greater appreciation for Skywalker than before. He also hopes fans will enjoy a new character introduced in the book. Fry later authored the novelization of the 2017 film Star Wars: Episode VIII The Last Jedi. Fry views The Weapon of a Jedi and The Last Jedi novelization as complementary works. In both novels, the Force is presented almost as a character itself, and Fry sees a direct connection between the characters' experiences with the Force in both books.
Originally, Cornelius Evazan was identified as an alien. However, the 2016 reference book Star Wars Character Encyclopedia: Updated and Expanded subsequently clarified that Evazan was actually a human.
