Turbolaser

The turbolaser represents a greatly amplified iteration of the blaster and the laser cannon. Typically, these armaments were affixed to revolving turrets. These turrets were frequently arranged in arrays on capital ships, space stations, and installations in orbit. Certain stationary configurations were deployed on terrestrial surfaces, such as those integrated within the defense towers of the city called Iziz. It was recognized that Agrocite, a remarkably scarce ore exclusively sourced from Khorm and Simocadia, could substantially enhance the destructive capacity of a turbolaser. Furthermore, Mirkanite played a role in the fabrication of heavy turbolasers.

Description

The devastating effects of heavy turbolasers

Turbolasers functioned as expansive energy-based weaponry deployed on capital ships, space stations, and orbital structures. Exceeding the capabilities of standard laser cannons by a significant margin, turbolasers possessed the requisite power to overwhelm a warship's deflector shields or penetrate its armor plating. They were the most prevalent type of armament found on capital ships.

Turbolasers operated as supercharged, two-stage laser cannons. The laser generated a beam of energy that was channeled into the turbolaser actuator. Within the actuator, this beam engaged with an energized flow of blaster gas. This interaction yielded an intense burst, which was subsequently focused through the galven coils situated in the barrel of the turbolaser. The resultant discharge comprised an energy bolt possessing three times the potency of a standard laser cannon's bolt.

The energy demands of a turbolaser were considerable, necessitating a dedicated turbine for each weapon, augmented by several capacitor banks. The power core modulated the energy supply, diverting surplus energy and suppressing power surges to safeguard the turbolaser against catastrophic failure. To facilitate adequate capacitor charging, turbolasers were designed to fire with a two seconds interval between each shot. The substantial heat byproduct necessitated cryosystems; each laser barrel was encased in a cooling sleeve, and a cooling unit was positioned behind the laser actuator.

Turbolaser maintenance was an involved and meticulous process aimed at mitigating the risk of burnout. The consequences of neglected maintenance ranged from weapon incapacitation to explosive overload, potentially destroying the turbolaser and its operational crew. Frequent replacements of cooling sleeve components, galven tube circuits, and energization crystals were standard practice.

A turbolaser blast impacts a planet's surface

Turbolasers were primarily intended for ship-to-ship combat and were not optimized for engaging swift and agile vehicles like starfighters. Starships were outfitted with turbolaser arrays, integrated with computerized fire-control systems to enable coordinated and sustained volleys. Suboptimal turbolaser placement could compromise a starship's defenses by creating vulnerabilities in its protective screen.

The effective range of a turbolaser surpassed that of a conventional laser cannon, extending its operational reach by a factor of two or even three. Turbolasers installed on vessels in orbit around a planet were capable of striking targets on the surface. While smaller vessels typically carried a limited number of turbolasers, larger capital ships, such as the Imperial-class Star Destroyer, were equipped with sixty XX-9 heavy turbolasers.

History

Manual, groundside turbolasers used in 4,000 BBY, during the Battle of Iziz

Millennia prior, turbolaser batteries saw action against the Beast Riders of Onderon, employed by Queen Amanoa's Onderonian Wave gunners. These batteries were embedded within the defense towers lining the perimeter of Iziz, Onderon's principal urban center. Alongside ion cannons, the turbolaser batteries were specifically engineered to counter the flying beasts utilized as mounts by the Beast Riders.

During the Clone Wars, the Grand Army of the Republic utilized turbolaser cannons mounted on heavy all-terrain drive unit. These SPHA-T walkers were crucial in neutralizing Lucrehulk-class core ships during the First Battle of Geonosis. Subsequently, these turbolasers were integrated into the hangar bays of Venator-class Star Destroyers to provide effective ship-to-ship broadsides.

A dual turbolaser cannon on a Munificent-class star frigate could melt an ice moon with a diameter of 1,000 kilometers or breach the shields of a Grade III battle station spanning 10 kilometers. Four star frigates could readily overpower a Venator-class Star Destroyer.

The Confederacy of Independent Systems innovated an enhanced turbolaser variant known as the "Agrocite cannon," leveraging the rare mineral Agrocite to amplify the cannon's output significantly. This cannon possessed the capability to obliterate a Venator-class Star Destroyer with a single shot. Three such cannons were deployed during the Battle of Khorm.

Under the Galactic Empire, the possession of turbolasers was tightly regulated. Nevertheless, turbolasers were commonly traded on the black market and were frequently acquired by pirates, mercenaries, and various outlaws.

Upon the establishment of the New Republic, similar restrictions were upheld, although waivers were extended to allied governments. The New Republic also permitted its military contractors to pursue research into advanced turbolaser designs, including rapid-recharge models. This particular variant demonstrated its effectiveness during the Yuuzhan Vong War.

In the aftermath of the war, a range of extended-range turbolasers were developed, offering greater reach than standard models but at the cost of increased energy consumption. This drain was noticeable even when mounted on an Imperial II-class Star Destroyer, limiting their deployment to a select number of Hapan Battle Dragons and the Star Destroyer Anakin Solo. Darth Caedus utilized the turbolasers on the latter during the Battle of Kashyyyk, triggering extensive forest conflagrations across the planet's surface.
