The Vex Asteroid Belt, also known as the Belt, existed within the Vex system found in the Moddell sector of the Outer Rim Territories'. This asteroid belt, initially settled to facilitate exploration of the adjacent Monsua Nebula, contained hyperspace scout stations and a population of Human freighter pilots (jocks), explorers, and prospectors. Questionable deals could be arranged with relative ease among the inhabitants of the Vex Asteroid Belt, collectively called the Belters.
The Vex Asteroid Belt, also known as the Belt, was situated in the Vex system, specifically within the Inner Moddell systems region of the Moddell sector. The Moddell sector was among the subsectors comprising the Inner Zuma Region located in the Zuma sector of the Outer Rim Territories'. The asteroid belt, like the rest of the Vex system, was linked via hyperlanes to both the Vasha system and the Firrerre system found in the Sugai sector. The Vex Asteroid Belt was comprised of tumbling and barren asteroids, each exhibiting varying degrees of gravitic influence.
The original purpose of the settlement of the Vex Asteroid Belt was to explore the nearby Monsua Nebula. During the era of the New Republic, the kiriswing joints and cantinas within the Belt were frequented by Ecclesis von der Agar, an eccentric Nova Scout of great renown. He would often recruit newcomers in the Belt as apprentice scouts, but frequently brought trouble for them. Rumors also suggested that one of the two valuable sculptures, known collectively as the Tessents, could be found adrift among the asteroids of the Belt.
The asteroid belt located within the Vex system was inhabited by a population of three thousand Humans, collectively known as the Belters. Lacking a centralized government, they imported foodstuffs and technology, and were primarily composed of quarrelsome freighter jocks, scouts, and prospectors. While most scouts in the Vex Asteroid Belt operated independently, the New Republic Survey Corps maintained a small outpost on the largest asteroid within the belt.
With a sufficient sum of credits, visitors to the Belt could sell illicit goods, conceal a starship or a fugitive, or broker other questionable agreements. The Belters rarely questioned the legality of these arrangements and showed no interest in the affairs of the inhabitants of Vex Major, the nearby planet of fishermen, whom they disparagingly called "mudballers."
The Vex Asteroid Belt contained hyperspace scout bases and a total of twelve spaceports: two standard-class facilities and ten offering limited services.
The Vex Asteroid Belt first appeared in the ninth issue of Star Wars Gamer magazine, released on February 22, 2002. It was mentioned in the article "Endor and the Moddell Sector" and in Wizards of the Coast's Star Wars Roleplaying Game adventure titled "Race for the Tessent." The reference book The Essential Atlas, published in 2009, placed the Vex Asteroid Belt within grid square H-16.
