The Vray were a peaceful species possessing sentience, one of numerous groups compelled to escape the invading Yuuzhan Vong during the Yuuzhan Vong War that spanned the galaxy. This conflict began when the Yuuzhan Vong invaded the galaxy from another dimension. In 27 ABY, Leia Organa Solo, a Jedi ally and former leader of the New Republic, along with her husband Han, journeyed to the Bilbringi Shipyards. Their purpose was to implore General Muun, the commander there, to supply them with ships to form an armed guard for the Vray's evacuation convoy. Prior to the Solos' arrival in the Bilbringi system, the Vray evacuation had been underway for weeks, involving at least one hundred thousand individuals.
Initially, Muun declined, as he was reluctant to expose the shipyards to a potential Yuuzhan Vong assault. However, when Warmaster Tsavong Lah dispatched Nom Anor to Bilbringi, conveying a message to the Solos that many refugees would be killed if the Jedi refused to surrender to the Yuuzhan Vong, Muun then viewed safeguarding the Vray refugees as a chance to advance his own standing. Consequently, he commanded a ten-vessel convoy to escort the Vray to a safe location.
The Vray received a mention in Troy Denning's work, Star by Star. This book was a 2001 addition to the Star Wars: The New Jedi Order series.
