During the Imperial Era, a criminal syndicate known as the White Worms operated out of Corellia. Lady Proxima was the leader of this organization, which was also referred to as the White Worm Gang. Noteworthy members included human scrumrats such as Han, Qi'ra, and Rebolt, in addition to Moloch, the Grindalid enforcer.
The adventure book Choose Your Destiny: A Han & Chewie Adventure, authored by Cavan Scott in 2018, was the first time the White Worms were referenced. Their debut appearance was in the Star Wars Anthology film Solo: A Star Wars Story, which was released in 2018. The gang's name was a tribute to Bram Stoker's 1911 novel titled The Lair of the White Worm.
The costumes worn by Han and Qi'ra as White Worm gang members on Corellia took inspiration from punk bands of the 1970s and 80s, such as The Clash, as well as the 1960s greaser gang depicted in the 1983 film The Outsiders. In the film's initial script, the White Worms were described as "well-dressed, vampiric albino aliens à la David Bowie in The Hunger," rather than Grindalids. However, when former directors Phil Lord and Christopher Miller joined the project, the decision was made to portray the White Worms' members as "actual" worms.
