Zax

Zax, a criminal of the Hutt species, operated within the Lower City of Taris, a planet, during the era of the Jedi Civil War.

Biography

While officially managing the Taris government bounty office, Zax also maintained a clandestine agreement with Davik Kang, allowing the crime lord to advertise his "special contracts." Furthermore, he had covert business relationships with the forerunners of the House of Organa.

Zax possessed a comprehensive network of informants who monitored both bounty hunters and the bounties themselves. This arrangement benefited both parties, as Zax was always informed when a job was completed, and the hunters were spared the necessity of producing corpses. However, his spies were not infallible; the amnesiac Revan successfully deceived them by making them believe Matrik had died. Revan accomplished this by destroying Matrik's apartment with a permacrete detonator after the Twi'lek had already departed. Some of the bounties he offered were Dia, Largo, Matrik (mentioned previously), Selven, and Bendak Starkiller. However, the payouts were not particularly lucrative, so Zax's office generally attracted low-level bounty hunters rather than skilled professionals such as Calo Nord.

Behind the scenes

In Knights of the Old Republic, the bounties offered to the player by Zax are each worth 300 credits. A player character with a high Persuasion skill can persuade Zax to increase the payment to 400 credits. Zax will then express his admiration for the player's boldness in negotiating with a Hutt.

The question of Zax's survival following the Sith fleet's bombardment of Taris remains unanswered. Given his residence in the Lower City, his chances of survival were greater than those of Ajuur, the Hutt who ran the dueling ring in the Upper City. However, given the bombing's intensity and the Hutts' lack of speed, Zax's survival is uncertain.

Two of the contracts posted by Zax originated from the Taris government: those for Bendak Starkiller and Selven. The remaining contracts were illegally posted at the request of Davik Kang or one of his associates.

Neil Kaplan provided his voice for the character in the game.
