By 35 ABY, the Sinta Glacier Colony extracted ice cores with trace amounts of malsarr in them from the heart of the massive ice chunk. During the First Order-Resistance War, the mine overseer Boolio covertly diverted surplus minerals from the colony to transports affiliated with the Resistance, which eventually led the First Order to dispatch inspectors to the settlement in order to investigate discrepancies in its accounts.
Malsarr was first mentioned in the current Star Wars canon in Pablo Hidalgo's 2019 reference book Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker: The Visual Dictionary. The malsarr ore was originally introduced in the Star Wars Legends continuity via mentions in Galaxy Guide 2: Yavin and Bespin, a 1989 sourcebook published by West End Games for use with Star Wars: The Roleplaying Game.
