Nevar Yalnal first appeared in the 1977 original trilogy film, Star Wars: Episode IV A New Hope. The character's mask was made by creature designer Stuart Freeborn and consisted mostly of hard foam and fake hair. The masked split in two when opened to allow the extra to put it on and was held in place by magnets inserted into the foam once closed. In the new Star Wars canon, the character was first named in the 2016 reference book Star Wars, Objets du mythe, which was written by Patrice Girod and . In the Star Wars Legends continuity, the name originated on a card in the 1995 Premiere Limited set for Star Wars Customizable Card Game. published by Decipher, Inc.
