Sentient humanoids resembling rodents, known as Ranats, constituted a species. These beings possessed keen olfactory senses, sharp teeth, elongated tails, and prominent facial incisors, in addition to long whiskers. Spread across the galaxy, Ranats engaged in diverse professions, notably as soldiers and bounty hunters.
Their distinguishing physical traits included lengthy tails, extended incisors jutting from their lower jaws, and long whiskers. Their eyes could perceive infrared radiation, and their powerful teeth were capable of gnawing through duracrete plate. Furthermore, Ranats possessed an acute sense of smell.
Even during the era of the New Republic, Ranats frequently faced prejudice within the galaxy. An instance of this occurred five years prior to the Battle of Yavin, when a Ranat bounty hunter and his Nimbanel colleague sought to claim a bounty placed on the Trandoshan bounty hunter Bossk on Lothal, a planet situated in the Outer Rim. This bounty had been issued by Lieutenant Jenkes of the corrupt Imperial Security Bureau. However, Bossk proved superior, rendering them unconscious. Subsequently, Nevar Yalnal, another Ranat, was observed in Chalmun's Spaceport Cantina on Tatooine during the pivotal meeting between Luke Skywalker, Obi-Wan Kenobi, the smuggler Han Solo, and his Wookiee companion Chewbacca. During the Battle of Jakku, Musmuris Reetgeet, a Ranat soldier, participated in a primarily human boarding party that seized the Immobilizer 418 cruiser Glaciate. Reetgeet was personally responsible for deactivating the cruiser's reactor governor.
The initial appearance of a Ranat occurred in Star Wars: Episode IV A New Hope in 1977, where they were portrayed by a costumed extra in the background.
Furthermore, a Ranat featured in the non-canonical 2017 LEGO Star Wars: The Freemaker Adventures episode "Return to the Wheel." In that episode, a group of Ranats mounted an attack on the B1-series battle droid Roger after he intervened to prevent one of their members from pilfering a datapad during a mission aimed at acquiring an energy matrix activator.
