Nevar Yalnal made his initial appearance in the original trilogy film released in 1977, titled Star Wars: Episode IV A New Hope. Stuart Freeborn, the creature designer, crafted the character's mask, primarily from rigid foam and artificial hair. The mask was designed to split into two halves for ease of donning by the extra, and it was secured with magnets embedded in the foam upon closure. Within the updated Star Wars canon, the character's designation was first established in the 2016 reference book Star Wars, Objets du mythe, authored by Patrice Girod and Arnaud Grunberg. Conversely, in the Star Wars Legends timeline, the name first emerged on a trading card from the 1995 Premiere Limited collection for the Star Wars Customizable Card Game, which was released by Decipher.
