Ambush at Xobome 6

The Ambush at Xobome 6, a significant event during the Galactic Civil War, involved the capture of the Night Caller. This modified Corellian corvette, a ship belonging to Warlord Zsinj's fleet, was ambushed and successfully seized by Wraith Squadron within the Xobome system.

Context

Following their escape from the Battle of Folor, Wraith Squadron, aboard the Narra, initiated a hyperspace jump towards Doldrums. Their intention was to rendezvous with other evacuees. However, their journey was abruptly halted when they were pulled out of hyperspace by Empion mines deployed by a support ship under the command of Admiral Apwar Trigit. These mines caused malfunctions in their starfighters and astromech droids, and also wiped their navigational data, effectively trapping them in the system. To address this predicament, Wedge Antilles instructed the squadron to land on Xobome 6 for repair operations.

The Surprise Attack

Reasoning that the enemy ship would likely return to monitor its trap, the Wraiths convinced Wedge Antilles of their plan to infiltrate it. They proposed using components salvaged from the damaged X-wings. Kell Tainer and Cubber Daine then engineered a small craft dubbed the Lunatic from Ton Phanan's wrecked X-wing. They equipped it with thrusters, a basic laser cannon, and an astromech droid for guidance. The scheme involved concealing a pilot within the smuggling compartment, allowing the Imperial vessel to tractor the Lunatic aboard. Once inside, the pilot would access the ship's systems and transmit a distress call to the New Republic. Voort saBinring volunteered for the role of infiltrator, citing his Gamorrean physiology as providing better resistance to the expected cold temperatures.

The arriving enemy ship was identified as the modified Corellian corvette Night Caller. It proceeded to tow the Lunatic into its cargo bay while simultaneously deploying a pair of TIE Fighters for reconnaissance. Meanwhile, the remaining Wraiths positioned themselves in a nearby asteroid field, where they swiftly eliminated the TIE fighters. Onboard the Night Caller, saBinring emerged from the smuggling compartment and successfully subdued the stormtroopers guarding the area. He then discharged his cannon into the hold's ceiling and ascended to the ship's bridge, where he demanded and secured the surrender of the bridge crew. He later discovered that the ship's captain, Zurel Darillian, had been killed by his shot into the ceiling.

Result

The rapid capture of the Night Caller prevented the crew from sending out a distress signal. Consequently, Zsinj's forces remained unaware of the ship's loss. Recognizing this opportunity, Antilles made the independent decision to impersonate the ship's crew and continue its assigned missions, hoping to find an opportunity to inflict a significant blow against Zsinj.
