Plot summary

Assistance Provided by a Youngster

While present on a certain planet, Poe Dameron, accompanied by his droid, BB-8, found themselves pursued by a native tribe. Previously, Dameron had inquired with the tribe about the whereabouts of his contact, an inquiry which provoked the tribe's anger. Dameron then pivoted and fired upon a sizable tree limb, creating a diversion for the tribe and affording them time to conceal themselves.

Despite Dameron's belief that they had evaded the tribe, a massive swamp creature emerged and struck Dameron. The creature then seized BB-8, but the BB-series astromech droid used a stun blast on the creature. Abruptly, a cloaked figure materialized and repelled the creature. The figure revealed himself to be a child named Kori Ong. Ong expressed a desire to repair BB-8, but struggled to understand the droid's communications. Dameron reappeared and introduced himself. He expressed gratitude to Ong for rescuing BB-8, and the two proceeded onward. Ong advised them to remain for the night, citing the dangers of traveling alone on the planet after dark.

Becoming Ensnared

Shortly thereafter, Ong was attempting to create a fire to provide warmth. However, BB-8 employed his welding torch to ignite a fire. Ong questioned Poe about the reason for his and BB-8's presence on the planet, but BB-8 countered by asking Ong about his activities in the swamps. Ong explained that he was undertaking a rite of passage to achieve manhood. According to his tribe's traditions, one must complete The Walkabout, where a boy journeys through the swamps and only returns upon reaching manhood. However, Ong was reluctant to return because his ambition was to explore space and subsequently return to assist his people. Dameron encouraged him, stating that if that was his aspiration, he should have confidence in his ability to achieve it.

The following morning, the trio was en route back to Dameron's X-wing starfighter, the Black One, when BB-8 inadvertently triggered a booby trap. They were ensnared in a net as the tribe appeared. Kori Ong instructed BB-8 to use his welding torch to release them from the net, and they fled with the tribe in pursuit. Ong lingered behind to impede their progress, launching rocks at them with his catapult. Poe utilized his blaster pistol to break branches and halt the tribe.

Having evaded the tribe, the three returned to Dameron's spacecraft. Ong was astonished upon seeing the ship. He then knelt before BB-8 and bid his final farewell to the droid. Dameron commended him for his assistance. He presented him with a badge bearing the Resistance emblem and expressed hope that Ong would one day join the Resistance.
