Antarian Rangers

The Antarian Rangers functioned as a security force and also as a paramilitary organization. They were established around 620 BBY with the purpose of aiding the Jedi Order, and subsequently, the New Jedi Order.

Organization

This unique group, composed of individuals who were not sensitive to the Force, stood apart from many citizens of the galaxy because they didn't fear the might of the Jedi. Instead, they were proactive in offering their assistance whenever possible, dedicating their lives to serving as support personnel for the Jedi Order. Their responsibilities encompassed a wide range of tasks, from deployment on reconnaissance missions to undertaking covert operations designed to streamline the Jedi's work. This also implied that, on occasion, they were assigned tasks deemed "dirty work". The Rangers were structured into various branches, with members constantly preparing for their service to the Jedi. The organization provided a natural outlet for those without Force abilities to realize their aspirations of connecting with the Force by contributing to the Jedi cause. Despite this, the life of a Ranger was challenging, and only the most committed and capable individuals prospered within the organization. Consequently, few members actually sought the rank of Ranger, with most becoming support personnel for this elite unit within the group.

At one point, their numbers exceeded a thousand, with a diversity of backgrounds mirroring that of the Jedi Order itself. Typically, Jedi who utilized Antarian Rangers interacted with a small, familiar group, relying on the same individuals repeatedly. This even progressed to the point where some Jedi had a semi-permanent Antarian Ranger companion who journeyed with them and served as an assistant. This relationship was likened to a Jedi Master-Padawan dynamic, with the Antarian Ranger assisting the Jedi in their endeavors. On such assignments, usually one to three Rangers accompanied a Jedi on their missions. In fact, in instances where the rules regarding emotional attachments were less strict, some Jedi were known to have married Antarian Rangers. This led to Jedi occasionally having familial and ideological connections to the Rangers.

Regarding recruitment, very few individuals joined the Antarian Rangers without being encouraged by a current member. The organization was known to monitor those recruits who were rejected for Jedi training, particularly selecting those old enough to make an informed decision about joining the group. Furthermore, any individual who admired the Jedi Order and sought to uphold its ideals was eligible for entry. However, those who excelled within the group possessed physical and mental prowess that matched their dedication. Upon joining, all members were assessed for relevant skills and potential contributions they could make to the organization. Most applicants became support personnel, serving as technicians, transport pilots, communication experts, and so on. However, some underwent the training necessary to become a fully fledged Ranger. Before reaching that point, all trainees were given the rank of Explorer and were permitted to accompany Rangers on perilous missions for field training but were not yet capable of performing independent duties. Upon becoming a true Ranger, they were granted all the rights and responsibilities associated with the position.

The group's structure resembled that of other military units, although it had fewer ranks compared to actual militaries. Recruitment remained a thorough process, requiring applicants to demonstrate their loyalty and competence. Rangers were expected to be available to respond to their leaders at all times. Their highly specialized training equipped them with survival and pathfinding skills, search and rescue protocols, and the ability to provide armed support for Jedi. Ranks included:

  • Explorer: The entry-level rank for applicants who had not yet completed their training to become full Rangers. [4]
  • Lieutenant: An honorary title within the Antarian Rangers. [4]
  • Ranger: Official members who had completed their training and were on active duty. [4]
  • Ranger Captain: Field commanders and officers within the organization who distinguished themselves through their ability to lead troops in combat. [4]
  • Ranger General: The highest-ranking position within the Antarian Rangers, responsible for making significant decisions affecting the entire organization. [4]

While a paramilitary organization, they could not afford losses even when their membership was at its peak because they were never a large faction. They valued the contributions of each member and made every effort to retain them within the organization. Retirement or discharge due to injury were valid reasons for leaving the Antarian Rangers, while leaving without a valid reason was considered desertion. Although they tried to keep their members enlisted, the Rangers did not prevent an individual who was determined to leave. At the same time, the organization was concerned about its secrets being disclosed to outsiders and took measures to address the issue if a former member began revealing sensitive information. Another reason for leaving was to join the Jedi Order, which was rare but considered an exceptional honor, with such members receiving a warm farewell from the group. The Rangers also monitored their members for overtly evil or cruel actions, which could lead to expulsion from the organization, similar to a Jedi embracing the dark side of the Force. Such disgraced Antarian Rangers received a dishonorable discharge before being expelled from the organization.

The Jedi Council was known to treat the Rangers with indifference, while individual Jedi opinions varied, with many working closely with the group and valuing their service. Although they were not officially endorsed or supported by the Jedi, the Antarian Rangers earned a respected reputation, despite not being widely known. During the peaceful era of the Old Republic, many grew wary of an independent, heavily armed organization—yet, the Rangers did not suffer the negative publicity that plagued the Jedi Order or its associates. This was another advantage for the group, as individuals intimidated by the Jedi Order were more likely to interact with a Ranger, which was one way the group contributed to the cause.

History

Origin

The Antarian Rangers were established on Antar 4 around 620 BBY during the Golden Age of the Old Republic thanks to the efforts of the human Jedi Knight Marus Timpel. Upon arriving on the planet for routine duties, he met a Gotal named Kaskutal who had been rejected for Jedi training. Kaskutal had limited Force sensitivity but was now a successful and wealthy businessman. During a conversation, Timpel noted how the Jedi lifestyle restricted his travels and resources, while Kaskutal still admired the Jedi way. After becoming friends, the Gotal offered to raise funds and resources from donors and investors to create an organization that would alleviate the problems faced by the Jedi Order. This led to the formation of the Antarian Rangers, who quickly expanded beyond Antar 4 and into the galaxy. Kaskutal himself was among the first true Rangers, assisting Timpel for the rest of his career. After Timpel's death, Kaskutal transitioned to an administrative role, ensuring that the organization established branches throughout the galaxy. Although small in its early years, the group was ambitious and managed to set up divisions on several well-populated systems such as Corellia, Brentaal, Ruan and Coruscant.

Their expansion throughout the Core Worlds resulted in the Rangers being predominantly Human, although other species continued to join their cause and occasionally rise to leadership positions. At the time, the Jedi were loosely organized and did not discourage the growth of the Antarian Rangers, as the group proved to be highly useful without drawing on the Jedi's resources. Furthermore, Kaskutal's sound investments and business deals ensured that the organization was financially stable, though not excessively wealthy.

In 53 BBY, Jedi Master Tahl encountered an individual dressed as an Antarian Ranger, whom she believed was carrying a message for her. However, when she approached him, the suspected Ranger and his accomplices attacked her, forcing Tahl to defend herself. The Ranger ultimately escaped, and Tahl contacted Jedi Master Yoda about the possibility of enlisting the Antarian Rangers' aid in the matter at Telos. However, Yoda declined the suggestion, despite the fact that they were stationed at nearby Toprawa, where the Order's closest allies trained with the Jedi. Tahl later commented that she had never seen an Antarian Ranger run from a fight and that the suspected individual on Telos had something to hide.

Clone Wars

In the period leading up to the Separatist Crisis, the Jedi Council adopted a more traditional stance regarding its policies, which resulted in the Jedi relying less on the Rangers. Antarian Rangers assisted Jedi during the Battle of Antar 4 against the Roshu Sune extremist group at the height of the Separatist Crisis. This period of inactivity led to some branches being disbanded, while others used their combat training and entrepreneurial skills to become freelance mercenaries or even members of a sector defense force. This reduced the organization to less than half its former size, although it experienced a resurgence during the Clone Wars. Rangers were in high demand at this time, as the Jedi were outnumbered and unable to adequately defend the galaxy from the Separatist threat. Consequently, the Antarian Rangers were once again called upon to aid the Jedi Order, with Jedi-Ranger pairings becoming common again. Membership also saw a brief increase during this period in the organization's history.

During the war, the Antarian Rangers served as leaders in the army and supported the Jedi who took leadership roles in the Grand Army of the Republic. However, the Antarian Rangers' ranks were stretched thin, and entire branches were destroyed in the fighting. The Rangers fought in another battle on Antar 4 during the Clone Wars, during which the Rangers there were decimated by Separatist bombardments. When Palpatine initiated the Great Jedi Purge, he considered supporters of the Jedi, such as the Rangers, to be targets equal to the Jedi themselves. Few in number, the remaining segments of the organization went into hiding for the duration of the Imperial Period and the Galactic Civil War. Upon the initiation of Order 66, a squad of Rangers in the service of Jedi General Rahm Kota managed to whisk him to safety and, after learning what had happened to the rest of the Jedi Order, vanished into the Outer Rim Territories.

Dark Times

During the era of the Galactic Empire, the Rangers gradually evolved from a paramilitary unit into an underground resistance movement. They never reached the scale of the Rebel Alliance and conducted covert military operations to locate and rescue Jedi. Their campaigns also included fighting against Imperial oppression while protecting their own members from discovery and imprisonment. This involved sheltering survivors of Order 66 in the hopes of preserving the few Force-sensitives and preparing them for the day when the Jedi Order would be reborn, with their charges becoming a new generation of Padawans. Among the small cells that operated during the rise of the Empire were those on Toprawa and Tabiid.

Members of this organization were hunted down by the Sith Lord Darth Vader and the Inquisitorius with the same ruthless determination that they had for Jedi. Consequently, anyone found to be associated with the Rangers faced the same punishment as suspected Rebel Alliance members or those who harbored fugitive Jedi. Thus, sympathizing with the Rangers was a dangerous choice in this era, and the Antarian Rangers required a level of dedication and loyalty that was rare in the galaxy at this time. Bounties were placed on the heads of known Rangers, and the Inquisitors' searches forced the remaining branches of the organization into hiding. One such group, led by the Feeorin Solm, openly opposed the tyranny of the Empire, but the majority of the Rangers went into seclusion or disbanded to avoid capture. The enclave that existed on the planet Toprawa was later eliminated by the Empire.

Rebirth

A Ranger during the New Republic era

After the Emperor's defeat and the establishment of the Jedi Praxeum, Luke Skywalker discovered the history of the Antarian Rangers and sought out the survivors. Branches began to rebuild their ranks, although New Republic politicians expressed concern about another independent, paramilitary group besides the New Jedi Order. This small group attempted to revitalize the organization and achieved limited success, with their membership consisting of no more than 50 to 60 individuals.

As the Republic weathered the remnants of the Empire, warlords, and other external and internal threats, the number of paramilitary and mercenary forces grew steadily, including the Antarian Rangers. By the invasion of the Yuuzhan Vong in 25 ABY, the organization had almost returned to its pre-Clone Wars numbers. The new Antarian Rangers were crucial to the protection of the Great River and the scouting of alternative routes to those established by Han Solo.

Equipment and training

When not assigned to a Jedi, Rangers often dedicated their time to training and honing their skills, preparing for when they were called upon for service. Those who held the rank of Ranger were trained to master any terrain. As such, they needed to be stealthy, observant, and capable of assisting a Jedi in the field. After attaining this position within the group, an Antarian Ranger was typically assigned to a sector or, in some cases, to a specific Jedi who requested their services. As they did not have a set uniform, they instead wore a distinctive brown leather jacket similar to those worn by off-duty members of sector defense forces.

Their preferred weapon was a modified Greff-Timms AR-1 blaster rifle.

Behind the scenes

The Antarian Rangers share similarities in name and function with the Aquillian Rangers in the second draft of the film that would become A New Hope.
