Astrographic Survey Institute

The Astrographic Survey Institute (ASI) functioned as a General Ministry Institute within the New Republic.

As a non-military organization, the ASI held the responsibility of finding, identifying, surveying, and cataloging unexplored planets, star systems, and various other celestial objects. Furthermore, the ASI was tasked with defining planetary coordinates utilized within navigation computers and observing potentially hazardous celestial anomalies and disasters, such as the possible supernova of Carconth. It seemingly collaborated extensively with the New Republic Astrogation Studies Center in its endeavors.

Due to ASI's vast and in-depth knowledge base, its personnel were frequently asked to assist the New Republic Intelligence Service and the New Republic Defense Fleet in evaluating threats and uncovering unique intelligence. They also routinely produced comprehensive reports on battles, conflicts, and crises for New Republic authorities, including events like the Corellian crisis and the Black Fleet Crisis.

During the Black Fleet Crisis, Kiles L'toth, who was then the Associate Director, reluctantly consented to dispatch Astrolabe into the Farlax sector to search for Yevethan activity when he had no other choice. While the crew of Astrolabe perished during this mission, it played a crucial role in involving the New Republic in the Koornacht Cluster and ensuring justice following the Yevethan Purge. Upon L'toth's departure to command the New Republic Fifth Battle Group, his son, Been L'toth, assumed the position of ASI director.

Later on, the ASI's expansive data repository saw significant growth when Moff Ephin Sarreti granted unrestricted access to the Imperial archives.

In the course of the Yuuzhan Vong War, Director L'toth spearheaded a team comprising ASI's top researchers and scientists to uncover the origins of the Yuuzhan Vong.
