Hapan Battle Dragon

The Hapan Battle Dragons served as the primary warships utilized by the Hapes Consortium.

Design and function

These Battle Dragons, conceived by Olanji/Charubah, became the principal capital ships within the Hapan Royal Navy, receiving support from Nova-class battle cruisers. Prince Isolder's crimson Battle Dragon, known as the Song of War, commanded the Hapan fleet, which comprised at least 63 Battle Dragons, each symbolizing a world within the Consortium.

The Battle Dragons possessed a distinctive dual saucer-shaped hull, measuring 500 meters in diameter, interconnected by a central core and sixteen rotation support struts. Their armament consisted of forty ion cannons and forty turbolaser batteries, strategically positioned on rotating circular sections located on both the upper and lower hull plates. To overcome the challenge of slow weapon recharge times, the disc rotated, presenting fresh guns to the enemy while the previously utilized guns replenished their capacitors, a method the Hapans considered a more effective deployment of firepower.

Beyond the rotating weapon emplacements, Battle Dragons were equipped with ten proton torpedo tubes, tractor beam projectors, heavy triple ion cannon batteries mounted dorsally and ventrally, and sixteen pulse mass mines launched via four pulse mass generator tubes. Each Battle Dragon accommodated three squadrons of either Miy'til starfighters or T-65 X-wing starfighters within its onboard hangars, along with a battalion of 500 soldiers. The ship's operation necessitated a crew of 1,200 individuals and 190 gunners.

Flaws

Combat revealed two critical weaknesses in the Battle Dragons: first, damage to the drive system could cripple the ship. Second, the design philosophy prioritized their use en masse against a limited number of targets. Consequently, the designers economized on targeting computers, installing only four.

This resulted in exceptional performance against a single target but proved ineffective against multiple targets. A lone Battle Dragon facing a group had limited tactical options, often resorting to selecting a direction and unleashing a barrage of energy in hopes of random hits enabling escape, reflecting the poor performance of the few targeting computers against numerous targets.

Tactics

The Hapans employed ion cannons to disable the deflector shields of opposing capital ships, such as an Imperial-class Star Destroyer, followed by volleys of proton torpedoes. This strategy proved highly successful, particularly when multiple Battle Dragons participated in the attack, as demonstrated during the Battle of Dathomir.

Pulse-mass mines generated a simulated mass shadow in space, preventing enemy ships from initiating hyperspace jumps. Deactivation of the mines was impossible until their power was depleted, posing a risk to the deploying Battle Dragon comparable to that faced by the targeted ships. The three squadrons of Miy'tils served as a fighter screen, preventing heavy bombers from breaching the ion cannon defense. The ion cannon-centric design was unique among capital ships, born from the Hapes Cluster's specific technological landscape. Their isolationist policies fostered ion cannon technology on par with, or potentially exceeding, galactic standards, while turbolaser technology lagged. Following their integration into the New Republic during the battle against the Yuuzhan Vong, the New Republic modernized the Hapan fleet with contemporary turbolaser technology. Gilad Pellaeon also facilitated upgrades to several Battle Dragons with new Galactic Alliance technology in 40 ABY.

Behind the scenes

Upon the introduction of Hapan Battle Dragons in The Courtship of Princess Leia, their weapon rotation mechanism was simply portrayed as a method to enhance their firing rate. The novel indicated that this system enabled Battle Dragons to fire three times faster than Imperial starships. The notion of Hapan turbolasers having slower recharge rates compared to their Imperial and New Republic counterparts was not introduced until RPG materials explored the concept.
