Baz, a human of the male variety, was an ensign within the Imperial Navy, a branch of the Galactic Empire. His service occurred in the early years of the Empire's existence. He was assigned to Sentinel Base, a construction project situated on a moon within the Outer Rim Territories, and overseen by Moff Wilhuff Tarkin. His use of spice, a type of narcotic, negatively impacted his job performance. While traveling aboard the Carrion Spike, Tarkin's personal starship, during its voyage from Sentinel Base to the planet Coruscant in 14 BBY, Tarkin detected indicators of Baz's drug use and subsequently ordered him confined to his assigned living space.

During the initial years of the Galactic Empire's control over the galaxy, Baz, a human of male sex, served as an ensign – a low-ranking officer – in the Imperial Navy. By the year 14 BBY, he was stationed at Sentinel Base, an Imperial construction initiative located on a moon in an unnamed system situated within the Outer Rim Territories. This base was the site of secret construction of a superweapon, overseen by Moff Wilhuff Tarkin. While stationed there, Baz secretly consumed spice, an illegal substance, within the motor pool repair bay's auxiliary dome, an area not monitored by security cameras. On one occasion, he stood near a T-44 landspeeder in a section of the bay close to a landing platform undergoing repairs, leaving a circular stain of lubricant and grit on his left boot. This spice use led to repeated tardiness and inattentiveness, documented in his service record. The unprocessed nature of some spice plugs resulted in stains on his fingers.
Following a brief attack on Sentinel Base by a rebel cell led by Berch Teller, a former agent of Republic Intelligence, Tarkin was summoned to the Imperial capital Coruscant. Baz was then selected to serve as a midshipman aboard the Moff's personal starship, the Carrion Spike. After the ship entered hyperspace after departing Sentinel Base, Tarkin gathered eighteen crew members, including Baz, in the conference room for a surprise inspection. Tarkin noticed the stain on Baz's boot, which the ensign claimed was hair gel. Tarkin recognized it as lubricant and revealed his knowledge of the repair bay's spice users. After pointing out other evidence of Baz's spice use, Tarkin ordered a petty officer to confine Baz to his quarters for the duration of the journey, promising to address the issue upon arrival at Coruscant.
Baz's brown hair, though cut to Imperial regulation length, was unruly and required hair gel for inspections. His spice habit caused a small cavity in his left eyetooth, and handling unprocessed spice left yellow-ochre stains on the index finger and thumb of his right hand. The drug also made him tardy and inattentive. During Tarkin's inspection, Baz's eyes were bloodshot, his gaze was unsteady, and he sweated profusely, which he attributed to hyperspace sickness.
Baz wore the standard Imperial uniform for officers, which differed from Tarkin's custom-made uniform with a slightly longer tunic, slimmer trousers, and a lower thread count. The uniform also included a cap.
Baz's character was introduced in Tarkin, a 2014 novel authored by James Luceno.
