Republic Intelligence

Republic Intelligence functioned as an espionage organization under the Galactic Republic. It carried out numerous secret missions to disrupt the Confederacy of Independent Systems's activities during the Clone Wars.

Description

As the primary agency responsible for intelligence gathering and clandestine operations, Republic Intelligence served the Galactic Republic throughout the Clone Wars. Many of its members came from the ranks of the Republic's Judicial Forces, notably the direct action operatives who were the Republic's top non-clone special ops soldiers in that era. While the Jedi High Council did assign some Jedi to work in intelligence, Republic Intelligence operatives often had limited direct interaction with Jedi Generals. They regularly collaborated with strategists, fleet commanders, and other high-ranking officers within the Grand Army of the Republic. One of the high-ranking officers within the organization was Dodd Rancit.

History

Capturing Dooku's sister

Around 23 BBY, Raz Fellidrone was dispatched by Republic Intelligence to capture Jenza, who was the sister of Count Dooku. Fellidrone took on the role of portmaster at Carannia Spaceport, but Asajj Ventress, Dooku's Sith apprentice, killed him, as she had also been sent to locate Jenza.

Organization during Clone Wars

During the time of the Clone Wars, Rancit orchestrated a number of operations, which included supervising Captain Berch Teller, who held the position of Republic Intelligence station chief. The Jedi High Council also assigned several Jedi, including Bode Akuna, to work on intelligence gathering efforts.

Investigation of Kudo III

Republic Intelligence later informed Admiral Wullf Yularen of the existence of a droid foundry on the third moon of the Kudo system.

Separatist Alliance-Republic Peace treaty

Following a failed attempted peace treaty between the Republic and the Separatists, Mina Bonteri, the treaty's originator, was killed. After her death, Count Dooku reported to the Galactic Senate that Bonteri had been killed in a Republic attack on the Separatist capital. After the Senate adjourned, Senator Bail Organa informed Senator Padmé Amidala and Onaconda Farr that Republic Intelligence had confirmed that Dooku's agents were responsible for Bonteri's murder, making Dooku's statement a falsehood.

Interrogating Poggle the Lesser

In 21 BBY, following the Second Battle of Geonosis, Archduke Poggle the Lesser, a member of the Separatist Council, was apprehended. After being captured, he was taken into Republic custody at the Republic Center for Military Operations. While in Republic custody, Poggle underwent frequent interrogation by Republic Intelligence, with a particular focus on the concept of the "Ultimate Weapon".

Debriefing Captain Tarkin

After Captain [Wilhuff Tarkin](/article/wilhuff_tarkin]'s escape from the Citadel with the coordinates to the Nexus Route, Republic Intelligence agents, including Teller, debriefed him. Later, Teller collaborated with Knotts, a subcontractor, and loyalist species from planets that had joined the Separatists, training them to serve as resistance fighters for the Republic. One of the Separatist worlds targeted was the Gotal moon of Antar 4.

Mobilizing D-Squad

In 20 BBY, Republic Intelligence intercepted an encrypted communication from General Grievous. The Jedi Council initiated a small operation, utilizing D-Squad to recover an encryption module.

Mission to Merj

Some Republic officers apparently preferred Republic Intelligence direct action operatives over clone special forces such as ARC troopers and clone commandos. Has Obitt believed that this was the case with Lieutenant Commander Orson Krennic, who specifically chose a Republic Intelligence team led by Matese to assist during the Mission to Merj.

Legacy

Following the end of the war and the transition to the Galactic Empire, Republic Intelligence was restructured into Imperial Intelligence. Teller anticipated that the Empire would spare his partisans from punishment due to their loyal service during the conflict. However, forces under Tarkin's command killed many of these fighters on Antar 4, along with former Separatists, in an event that became known as the Antar Atrocity. This event enraged Teller, leading to his desertion and the formation of his own resistance cell to fight against the Empire.
