A bombing incident at the Jedi Temple occurred a few months before the conclusion of the Clone Wars. This act of terror was perpetrated by Separatist Captain Rackham Sear. However, the Jedi successfully thwarted the bombing attempt, and Sear perished as a result.
Separatist commanding officers General Grievous, Kleeve, along with their leading explosives specialist, Captain Rackham Sear, conceived a suicide mission targeting the Jedi Temple located on Coruscant. Subsequently, Sear provided bounty hunter Cad Bane with a substantial payment in exchange for schematics of the Jedi Temple, provided by Lord Sidious. Sear's strategy involved collapsing the Jedi Temple's towers, with the intention of demonstrating the vulnerability of both the Galactic Republic and the Jedi Order.
Following this, Sear traveled to Coruscant, scaled the Temple's exterior walls, and infiltrated the ventilation system, where he strategically placed mini-drone explosives. However, Jedi Council member, Master Depa Billaba and initiate Caleb Dume detected him as his explosives detonated.
Despite the force of the explosion, Billaba managed to shield Dume from the initial impact. Master Cin Drallig and the Jedi Temple Guards then rescued Sammo Quid and the other younglings from Sear's remaining explosives, while Yoda used the Force to move others away from the Temple. After confirming the safety of everyone present, fellow council members, Masters Mace Windu and Obi-Wan Kenobi, promptly initiated an investigation into the bombing. Billaba and Dume, although hesitant, resolved to locate Sear. Dume surmised that Sear was utilizing the air ducts to deploy his explosives, leading Dume to quickly intercept him.
Dume discovered and confronted Sear on the Temple's rooftop. Following a brief verbal exchange, Dume launched an attack on Sear. However, Sear successfully incapacitated him with precisely placed explosives. Just as Sear was about to eliminate Dume, Billaba intervened to stop him. Dume soon realized that Sear's objective was to detonate the temple's central spire. Sear attempted to trigger his explosives, but Billaba employed the Force to prevent the detonation and launched the explosives away from the Spire.
Sear then identified himself to Billaba and Dume and hurled his Electro swords at them. However, Billaba and Dume were able to destroy them. Sear then jumped off the Temple's roof and attempted to kill Billaba and Dume with last of his explosives while falling to his death. Billaba saved Dume and they both survived the blast.
Billaba made the decision to take Dume, despite his youth, as her Padawan. She and Dume were soon found by Masters Windu and Kenobi. Dume's friend believed he would not be safe with Billaba, but Dume accepted the offer of being her apprentice. With Dume at her side, Billaba took command of a large force in the Grand Army of the Republic.
