Byss (Abyssin)

The world of Byss, situated in the Outer Rim, was located within the Byss and Abyss system found in The Slice.

History

Byss was discovered sometime between the Kymoodon Era and the Rianitus Period. It was largely neglected in terms of galactic commerce, with its primary export being the Abyssin people, who were traded as slaves. During the Jedi Civil War, the Sith Empire controlled the space around Byss, and millennia later, this same space became a battleground during the Clone Wars.

During the Galactic War, Byss gained notoriety for its cheese production.

The Galactic Empire later annexed Byss, which resulted in the unrestricted resumption of the planet's slave trade due to the removal of old Republic sanctions. The New Republic subsequently liberated Byss after the Empire's collapse, but the Yuuzhan Vong invaded the system around 27 ABY. By 137 ABY, Byss had aligned itself with the Galactic Alliance Remnant.

Geography

The planet is the homeworld of the one-eyed Abyssin. It orbits the binary stars Byss and Abyss in an unusual figure-eight shaped orbit. Byss is a hot and arid world, and its temperatures reach extreme levels during "The Burning," when the planet passes between its two suns, resulting in a period without night.

Much of Byss's animal life either went into hibernation during the hottest part of the year or lived entirely underground. Furthermore, the animals of Byss developed various methods for conserving water, such as the Abyssin's ability to quickly regenerate from injuries to reduce blood loss. The majority of plant life on Byss utilized extensive taproots to access underground water sources. The gaunt was one of the animals native to Byss.

Behind the scenes

In the PC game Star Wars: Rebellion, Byss is mistakenly located in the Farfin sector, a misspelling of the actual Farrfin sector, which is part of the Galactic Core.
