Carklin Ryoon, a gunner of the Ssori race, served within the pirate organization known as the Sovereign Latitudes of Maracavanya under the leadership of Eleodie Maracavanya. Ryoon's post was on the stolen Super Star Destroyer, named Liberty's Misrule. Physically, he possessed diminutive mouth, pointed teeth, and insect-like eyes. Unlike many of his species who opted for mechanical enhancements to augment their small stature, he opted to remain unaugmented. After the Battle of Jakku, Ryoon alerted Eleodie to the arrival of three Imperial II-class Star Destroyers that had emerged from hyperspace and were attempting to contact them. Obeying Eleodie's commands, Ryoon initiated an attack on the Imperial ships as a means of ingratiating themselves with the New Republic.
