Chewbacca #2 represents the second installment in the five-part comic book miniseries, Star Wars: Chewbacca, published by Marvel. Gerry Duggan penned the story, while Phil Noto provided the illustrations. Its release date was October 28, 2015.
The renowned co-pilot of the celebrated Millennium Falcon, the mighty Wookiee warrior CHEWBACCA, takes center stage in his own limited-run comic adventure! Following the battle of Yavin, Chewbacca finds himself isolated after his ship crashes on a planet under Imperial control. Now marooned, Chewie is torn between his desire to rejoin the rebellion and his need to aid a spirited young girl who requires assistance. Writer Gerry Duggan (DEADPOOL, 1872, HULK) and artist Phil Noto (BLACK WIDOW, X-23, UNCANNY X-FORCE) present an unprecedented narrative featuring the heroic Wookiee we all adore.
On the subsequent day, Zarro and Chewbacca make their way toward the entrance of Jaum's mine. After Chewie uses his macrobinoculars to survey the area, Zarro points out the air vents. Her suggestion involves a clandestine descent using the hoist line, allowing all the enslaved workers to escape tonight without engaging in combat. However, the Andelm beetle lava sometimes causes the air shafts to collapse, necessitating the identification of a stable one. Chewie expresses concern about the possibility of being trapped, but Zarro explains that her strategy involves intentionally getting captured. To maintain communication, Zarro has borrowed Chewbacca's transmitter, equipped with a homing beacon.
As planned, Jaum's guards apprehend Zarro. As a consequence, Jaum decrees that her work shifts be doubled and her rations be halved. She locates her father, Arrax, and her friend, Dek, and informs them of her escape plan. Zarro employs a shovel to commence digging through a hollowed-out portion of the mine. Chewie is able to track her progress using another transmitter. While tunneling through an air vent, Chewie experiences flashbacks of his and his people's enslavement by Trandoshan slavers. Chewie's efforts are disrupted when he learns of Zarro's capture by Jaum's men.
Arrax pleads for his daughter's life, but Jaum remains indifferent. Addressing the captive laborers, he announces that their arrangement is nearing its conclusion. Jaum reveals that he has sold the entire Andelm beetle operation, including his slaves, to the Galactic Empire. The Empire's interest lies in the Andelm beetles, which contain a wealth of rare organic compounds utilized in the production of blasters. He intends to replace his indentured workforce with droids. When one of the enslaved laborers attempts to assault Jaum with a shovel, Jaum fatally shoots him with his blaster pistol. Sensing potential unrest among the laborers, Jaum instructs his guards to execute them.
Before the guards can carry out the executions, Chewbacca materializes behind them and subdues them. He even eliminates one with his Bowcaster. After introducing her friend Chewbacca to her father and the other miners, Arrax urges the miners to fight their way to freedom. Utilizing a broken-down GNK-series power droid, Chewie manages to create a makeshift rod. He employs the rod to disable a wheeled battle droid. Meanwhile, Jaum learns about the miners' "hairy demon" from one of his guards, who is addicted to spice. Having other plans, Jaum eliminates the guard with his blaster pistol. While finishing off the battle droid, Chewie is confronted by another guard who challenges him to a blaster fight. However, the Wookiee knocks him unconscious with the discarded GNK power droid.
Arrax and Zarro return Chewie's bowcaster to him, and he searches for an exit. Upon entering the loading bay, the Wookiee discovers that Jaum has escaped but left behind crates of Andelm beetle larvae. Outside, Jaum's Shistavanen bodyguard, Tyvak, fires a blaster shot at the crates. They intend to detonate the volatile larvae, killing the rebellious miners and the Wookiee. The Shistavanen recites an age-old saying about Wookiees: "Never let a Wookiee live. Thy bring ill fortune. Kill them wheneverrr [sic] you can."
