Clone ordnance specialists, alternatively referred to as Bomb Squad Clone Troopers, were specialized clone troopers whose expertise lay in deactivating explosives, notably the neutralization of bombs. This occupation was known as one of the most hazardous within the Republic's armed forces. Furthermore, they were known for their deployment of bombs and other explosive devices during combat situations. Ordnance specialists were structured into squad-sized units. Bomb squads found their placements within larger clone battalions. Consistent with the majority of clone troopers, ordnance specialists possessed a height of 1.83 meters, equivalent to 6 feet.
The uniform of clone ordnance specialists comprised the standard Phase I clone trooper armor, distinguished by prominent orange markings situated on the upper legs and lower arms, as well as on the skull, the rear of the head, and the cheeks of the helmet. Beyond their specialized bomb disposal tools, ordnance specialists had access to standard weaponry utilized by the Republic Army, such as the DC-15A blaster carbine. Clones selected for the high-stakes role of a bomb squad trooper needed to demonstrate unwavering composure, a delicate touch, and the capability to maintain concentration amidst the disarray of warfare. Bomb squad troopers also possessed proficiency in armed and unarmed combat, military strategies, infiltration techniques, and security protocols.
During the time of 21 BBY, these troopers were summoned to safeguard the planet Naboo from the threat of biological warfare, following the re-creation of the Blue Shadow Virus by Doctor Nuvo Vindi. They accompanied Jedi Generals Obi-Wan Kenobi and Anakin Skywalker, along with their respective troops, into Vindi's secret lab with the objective of deactivating viral bombs containing the lethal virus. Despite their success in neutralizing nearly all of the bombs, the LEP-series service droid identified as LEP-86C8 managed to trigger one bomb, thereby releasing the virus and compelling Republic forces to isolate themselves within the lab to prevent its further dissemination.
The initial appearance of clone ordnance specialists occurred in the episode titled "Blue Shadow Virus," which served as the seventeenth episode within the first season of the animated television series Star Wars: The Clone Wars. During Star Wars Celebration Anaheim 2022, a Phase II clone helmet belonging to a clone ordnance specialist was showcased as one of the eight collectible pins featured in the Mystery Helmets Collection.
