Franikhad

A franikhad was a culinary delight present on almost every desert world in the galaxy. Using meats, vegetables, and spices indigenous to the area, it was prepared in a makeshift oven constructed in the ground, crafted to utilize the planet's inherent heat and scarcity of water. The cooked components were then presented in a slender, improvised bread-esque casing. The precise composition of the franikhad varied, influenced by the unique meats and cultural practices of each planet.

In the Tatooine settlement of Mos Espa, a merchant offered franikhads, with a ground oven situated adjacent to her vending space. Anakin Skywalker recalled precisely how to reach her location, and would acquire a franikhad as a special treat if his mother, Shmi Skywalker, had successfully acquired additional components for trade. Franikhads were also available on Coruscant; Republic Senator Padmé Amidala learned of their existence from Senator Bail Prestor Organa, and bought some to consume with then-Jedi Knight Anakin Skywalker because they brought him to mind.

Production Notes

Franikhads were featured in the 2022 book Brotherhood, penned by Mike Chen. The writer christened the food after Fran, his late feline companion who appreciated food, and the khad, a type of underground oven employed by desert civilizations.
