Ghoel was a male Wol Cabasshite who made his home in Jabba's Palace on Tatooine during the age of the Galactic Civil War. This adaptable creature, at times confused for vermin, the mollusk-esque Ghoel frequently adhered to the walls and archways of the palace. He also utilized his grasping tongue to lick other denizens of the court. He was within the palace's audience chamber in 4 ABY when Luke Skywalker conveyed a message to Jabba the Hutt. Later, he licked C-3PO while the protocol droid interpreted Jabba's pronouncement of doom upon Skywalker and his Rebel allies.
Ghoel made an appearance in the 1983 original trilogy movie, Star Wars: Episode VI Return of the Jedi. A preliminary version of the character, including a forked tongue, was created for the movie. To simulate a wet appearance, epoxy was applied to various sections of the final costume. This character was listed as the tenth creature being developed for the film on November 4, 1981. During production, he was nicknamed "Low Clearance" and "Wol Cabasshite," the latter becoming the name of his species. He was also simply referred to as "Slug." Within current Star Wars canon, the character was first officially named Ghoel in the 2017 reference book titled Star Wars: The Visual Encyclopedia.
