Gretchen was a member of the Rebellion's starfighter squadron, the Firestar Girls, which consisted largely of children, stationed on the moon Yavin 4 in 0 BBY. While preparing for the impending battle, Gretchen encountered the young pilot Isabella, whom she was previously aware of. Acknowledging their slim chances of victory, Gretchen delivered a speech inviting Isabella to join the Rebellion, but Isabella declined and departed. Jek Tono Porkins, a rebel pilot, then criticized the speech, prompting Gretchen to tell him to be quiet in response.
Just before the Galactic Empire's Death Star battle station was destroyed during the Battle of Yavin, Gretchen and the Firestar Girls evacuated all the non-combatant workers serving the Empire from the doomed space station, escaping just in time on a GR-75 medium transport. The rescued personnel voiced their relief at being saved from certain death.
Following the battle, Gretchen returned to Yavin 4 and took part in the Royal Award Ceremony and the subsequent afterparty to celebrate their success with the rest of the Rebellion. During the celebration, Gretchen and the other Firestar Girls climbed on the Wookiee smuggler Chewbacca as he spun around in excitement. The party was interrupted when Porkins crashed into the gathering with a parachute, leading Gretchen to sarcastically compliment the crashed pilot.

Gretchen, a courageous pilot, became part of the Alliance to Restore the Republic to oppose the oppressive Galactic Empire, but she also displayed a pessimistic yet realistic view of the war, acknowledging the Rebellion's low odds of success. Gretchen was the leader of the Firestar Girls during their time with the Rebellion.

She was originally a recurring character in the Disney Channel animated series Phineas and Ferb, from which the crossover originated. Ariel Winter provided Gretchen's voice, as in the main series.
