Ground Assault

The second release in the Star Wars PocketModel TCG was titled Ground Assault. This set, which came out on November 14, 2007, brought an additional 120 cards and 36 styrene sheets into the game, which together featured 67 units. The units included various ship types from the original and prequel movies, as well as content from the Expanded Universe, and represented forces from the Rebel, Imperial, Republic, and Separatist factions. It was a standalone product, so you didn't need to own the Base Set to play, though cards and units from both sets could be mixed. This set also added ground units, like AT-ATs and Spider Droids, along with new rules for using them.

This expansion also had additional products, such as the Battle for Hoth Tin (BHoth), which contained a fixed deck of 30 cards that focused on the Battle of Hoth, as well as AT-AT, AT-ST, snowspeeder, and tauntaun PocketModels (with a suggested retail price of $19.99). The tin also had a unique emplacement and a matching exclusive objective card. Each Ground Assault expansion pack (suggested retail price $4.99) included 2 styrene cards (containing 4-8 PocketModels), 6 regular cards, 2 dice, and a rules sheet.

GenCon 2007 hosted the pre-release tournament for Ground Assault. The expansion was initially planned for a September 2007 launch, but the release was pushed back to November. A promotional playmat poster was available through a mail-in offer when you bought five packs from participating stores.

The Ground Assault expansion introduced these new gameplay rules and ideas:

  • Regulations for ground units
  • New icons: Battle Droid, Blaster, Transport, and Armor

This commemorative Star Wars 30th Anniversary Battle of Hoth tin, also known as BHoth, brought a new type of playable component into the game: the emplacement. This could be deployed alongside an exclusive Echo Base objective card that came with it. However, because of mistakes at the factory, the tin did not include a rules book or model construction sheet. The tin only contained the following:

Battle of Hoth Playmat

Battle of Hoth playmat/poster

A promotional Battle of Hoth playmat (Hoth mat) was offered through a mail-away coupon, available on the official WizKids website or at a local game store (LGS) with the purchase of five booster packs. To redeem the coupon, you had to send it in along with five wrappers and their corresponding receipts. The playmat featured zones designed for gameplay, with designated areas for placing cards and game pieces held in reserve.

The playmat's background displayed PocketModel units in an icy setting, depicting a scene from Star Wars: Episode V The Empire Strikes Back during the Battle of Hoth. The zones and fields used in the game were labeled on the playmat in both Aurebesh and English.
