Gray Squadron, also known as Grey Squadron, was a squadron of starfighters that fought for the Rebel Alliance's starfighter corps throughout the Galactic Civil War. The Battle of Endor and the Battle of Vrogas Vas stand out as the squadron's most significant engagements.
The Rebel Alliance's starfighter corps included Gray Squadron, a starfighter squadron that featured a combination of A/SF-01 B-wing starfighters, RZ-1 A-wing interceptors, and BTL-A4 Y-wing assault starfighter/bombers. The Galactic Civil War saw the squadron in service. The Rebel Alliance's refueling base on Vrogas Vas served as the squadron's base around 0 ABY. Horton Salm commanded the squadron around 4 ABY, and Lieutenant Gureni Telsij and Lieutenant Ekelarc Yong were among the staff officers.
During 0 ABY, the planet Vrogas Vas saw the arrival of Sith Lord Darth Vader in search of Luke Skywalker, and the squadron, composed of Y-wings, was one of six squadrons present. Previously, Vader had completely annihilated Yellow Squadron and Blue Squadron. Even after Luke Skywalker crashed his X-wing into Vader's TIE Advanced x1, causing both to crash on the planet, Vader was still able to destroy all of Gray Squadron's Y-wings. Before the squadron could begin their bombing run on Vader, the Sith Lord employed the Force to hurl rocks and wreckage from his downed TIE at the Rebel starfighters, destroying at least one Y-wing and causing the remaining squadron Y-wings to collide.
During the Battle of Endor in 4 ABY, Horton Salm (Gray Leader) commanded Gray Squadron in a large-scale Rebel assault on the Empire's second Death Star, fighting alongside the Alliance Fleet and numerous other starfighter squadrons, including Gold, Red, Green, Blue, Blade and Corona Squadron. The squadron consisted of a mix of Y-wings, A-wings, and B-wings during the space battle. The Star Destroyer Vehement was destroyed by the squadron. The Alliance achieved a crucial victory in the battle, resulting in the destruction of the battle station and the deaths of Emperor Palpatine and Darth Vader. However, the Alliance also suffered significant losses, including the deaths of squadron pilots such as Lieutenant Gureni Telsij and Lieutenant Ekelarc Yong (Gray Three).
