Gruna, a male Nessie, served as the captain of an Ithullan ore hauler, transporting valuable mutonium ore through the dangerous Stenness Node in the time before the Great Sith War. The ship commanded by Gruna frequently faced assaults from pirates, notably Finhead Stonebone and his gang, due to the high value of its cargo. To combat this threat, Gruna hired Bogga the Hutt, a local crime lord, to provide protection during the hauler's journeys through pirate-infested space. During one particular voyage in 3999 BBY, Stonebone's crew launched an ambush on Gruna's ship, resulting in the death of Dreebo, an enforcer working for Bogga, and the theft of some of the ore. However, Bogga's warship, the Enforcer One, emerged from hyperspace, capturing the pirates and rescuing Gruna, his crew, and the remaining cargo.
Serving as the captain of an Ithullan ore hauler starship, Gruna, who was a male Nessie, operated in the years preceding the Great Sith War. The ore hauler captained by Gruna, constructed from the carapace of a Colossus wasp, transported high-value mutonium ore from mining operations within the Stenness Node to the Stenness Hyperspace Terminal. These operations were fraught with danger, as pirates in the area frequently targeted the ore haulers traversing the Node. To safeguard his valuable cargo from these marauders, Gruna paid a substantial sum to Bogga the Hutt, a local crime lord, securing armed escorts in return.
During a routine mutonium shipment to the Stenness Hyperspace Terminal in 3999 BBY, Gruna's ore hauler was attacked by Finhead Stonebone's pirate gang. Dreebo, one of Bogga's operatives, promptly arrived piloting his starfighter to defend Gruna's ship. However, he met his end when C'borp, a pirate gunner aboard the pirate vessel Marauder Starjacker, killed him. With Gruna's ship now vulnerable, the pirates boarded, breaching the hull to begin stealing the ore. Just then, Bogga's warship, the Enforcer One, materialized from hyperspace, capturing the pirates and saving Gruna and his crew.
Gruna held pirates in utter contempt, often calling those who plagued the Stenness Node "scum". When pirates attacked his ship, he would quickly become frustrated and impatient, expecting Bogga's enforcers to arrive much faster than they did.
Gruna makes an appearance in Tales of the Jedi: The Saga of Nomi Sunrider, which is the second story arc of the Tales of the Jedi comic book series. Tom Veitch wrote this series, which was released between late 1993 and early 1994. His only appearance in the series is in the second issue of that arc, with illustrations by David Roach. Gruna was given an entry in the Star Wars Encyclopedia in 1998, and in 2008, he was given an entry in The Complete Star Wars Encyclopedia.
