Stenness Hyperspace Terminal

The Stenness Spaceport, alternatively known as the Stenness Hyperspace Terminal, existed as a space station positioned in proximity to a hyperspace beacon within the Stenness system of the Inner Rim. This multifaceted structure, situated on the mining periphery, accommodated numerous vendors and merchants, featuring hundreds of levels that housed brothels. As a result, many criminals en route to unlawfully seize mining rights from the Nessies, the inhabitants of the Stenness Node area, frequented this station. Crime lord Bogga the Hutt, operating out of Stenness, and his gang also maintained a presence at the terminal.

In the year 3999 BBY, Jedi Knight Andur Sunrider, accompanied by his family, made a stop at the Stenness Hyperspace Terminal while transporting a consignment of precious Adegan crystals intended for Jedi Master Thon. Bogga's interest was ignited by these crystals, leading him to dispatch three of his enforcers to procure them. During the subsequent struggle, Andur Sunrider met his death, and his wife Nomi seized his lightsaber, eliminating the assailants. Nomi Sunrider then departed from the Stenness Hyperspace Terminal aboard her ship, the Lightside Explorer, resolved to complete the delivery her deceased husband had started.

Description

The Stenness Hyperspace Terminal was a space station situated near the Stenness system within the Inner Rim, along the Whitebeam Run hyperspace route. Its structure was extensive, gray, and multi-tiered, featuring numerous wings and corridors extending from its central framework. The spaceport comprised three levels equipped with docking bays, four levels dedicated to food courts offering items like Stenness lizard pie, and a staggering nine hundred and forty-seven levels filled with brothels. Given the high volume of travelers passing through the Stenness Hyperspace Terminal, numerous traders and merchants roamed its halls, attempting to peddle goods such as Novanian grog liquor.

History

Beacon of crime

Bogga the Hutt, who operated on the Stenness Hyperspace Terminal

Hyperspace beacons were essential for facilitating hyperspace travel in 3999 BBY. These beacons were erected at established, secure jump points, guiding ships entering hyperspace. Complex spaceports were often constructed at these beacon sites to accommodate and service the constantly growing trans-galactic traffic. The Stenness Hyperspace Terminal was one such establishment, built near a beacon in the Stenness system within the Inner Rim. Situated on the mining frontier, the terminal became a known transit point for criminals seeking to unlawfully seize mining rights from the Nessies, the native inhabitants of the Stenness Node region, by 3999 BBY. Miners used cargo ships constructed from the shells of giant Colossus wasps to transport ores to the terminal.

In 3999 BBY, Jedi Knight Andur Sunrider and his family, en route to deliver valuable Adegan crystals to Jedi Master Thon of the Tchuukthai, docked at the Stenness Hyperspace Terminal aboard their vessel, the Lightside Explorer. However, Quanto and Gudb, two enforcers belonging to Stenness-based crime lord Bogga the Hutt, discovered the package via eavesdropping equipment located within the station. The two thugs then passed this information to Bogga, who became intrigued.

Confronting the visitors

The Sunrider family arrives on the Stenness Hyperspace Terminal.

Bogga assembled a trio of enforcers, comprising Gudb, Rek, and Quanto, and dispatched them to accost the Sunriders as they awaited customs clearance for their ship. Rek and Quanto began harassing Andur Sunrider's protocol droid, A-3DO, attracting the Jedi's attention. While Sunrider was distracted, Gudb released his pet gorm-worm, Skritch, which killed Sunrider with its poisonous bite. As Nomi, Sunrider's wife, knelt beside her husband's body, Andur's Force ghost materialized and instructed Nomi to take up his lightsaber and defend herself. Nomi followed his guidance, using her fallen husband's weapon to strike down the thugs. Shortly thereafter, Nomi departed the Stenness Hyperspace Terminal aboard the Lightside Explorer, determined to fulfill the delivery of the Adegan crystals.

Around the same time as the Sunrider incident, Satal and Aleema Keto, the heirs to the throne of the Empress Teta system, visited the station aboard their ship, the Krath Enchanter. The Ketos, en route to the Galactic Republic capital on Coruscant, made a stop to refuel. Since the ship carried no cargo, it was cleared to land at Docking Bay Four.

Inhabitants

The Stenness Hyperspace Terminal was a popular stopover for many travelers, including a significant number of criminals heading to steal mining rights from the Nessies. Consequently, numerous traders and merchants were present at the spaceport, hoping to conduct business with those passing through. Bogga the Hutt, a local crime lord, maintained a presence on the Stenness Hyperspace Terminal, along with several of his enforcers.

Locations

The Lightside Explorer flies to the Stenness Hyperspace Terminal.

The Stenness Hyperspace Terminal encompassed a thousand levels, with three dedicated to docking bays, four featuring food courts, and nine hundred and forty-seven housing brothels. The space station's docking bays, such as Docking Bay Four, where Satal Keto landed in the Krath Enchanter, were all numbered. Bogga the Hutt and his gang maintained a room on the terminal, and a separate room housed monitoring equipment used by Bogga's enforcers to track incoming ships and identify potential targets for hijacking. However, the monitoring station's location on the opposite side of the station from some docking bays, such as Docking Bay Six, discouraged Bogga's thugs from hijacking vessels in that area. The station's food courts were lively and filled with sentient beings, with fountains situated nearby.

Behind the scenes

The Stenness Hyperspace Terminal made its initial appearance, albeit unidentified, in the third issue of the Tales of the Jedi comic book series, penned by Tom Veitch, illustrated by Janine Johnston, and released by Dark Horse Comics on December 21, 1993. Its identification as the Stenness Hyperspace Terminal occurred in Tales of the Jedi's fourth issue—also written by Veitch and released on January 18, 1994—while the 1995 Tales of the Jedi audio drama adaptation, based on Veitch's comics and adapted by John Whitman, referred to it as the Stenness Spaceport.
