Plot summary

Andur Sunrider, a Jedi Knight, along with his wife Nomi, their daughter Vima, and their droid A-3DO, are on a journey from H'ratth to the Stenness system to meet Master Thon, carrying Adegan crystals as a gift. While A-3D0 is fixing the hyperdrive, Andur reveals to Nomi that his teacher instructed him to present the crystals to Master Thon. Both Nomi and Vima possess Force-sensitive abilities. Although Nomi is hesitant to become a Jedi, both she and Andur believe that Vima has the potential to become a powerful Jedi. Andur expresses his desire to train both Nomi and Vima in the ways of the Jedi.

During their travels, the Sunriders make a stop at a hyperspace port near the Stenness Node, where Bogga the Hutt learns about the Adegan crystals in Andur's possession. Bogga dispatches three of his enforcers; Gudb, Quanto, and Rek; with orders to eliminate Andur and seize the crystals. The gangsters instigate a conflict with A-3D0, the Sunriders' droid. When Andur intervenes, Gudb releases his small Gorm-worm, Skritch, which bites Andur in the neck, resulting in his death.

Nomi lets out a scream of terror, but the spirit of her husband contacts her, urging her to take his lightsaber and defend herself. She swiftly defeats Quanto and Rek, but Gudb manages to escape. Guided by the Force, Nomi, Vima, and A-3D0 continue their journey to Master Thon's residence on the planet Ambria, fulfilling Andur's request to deliver the crystals.

After landing on Ambria, Nomi instructs Threedee to stay behind and guard the Lightside Explorer. She then ventures through the desolate landscape of Ambria in search of Master Thon. Along the way, they encounter Lake Natth, where Nomi is assailed by voices from the dark side. However, another voice encourages her to resist the dark side and follow a herd of staga, which leads her to a secluded dwelling. There, she encounters Oss Wilum, who is secretly Master Thon, riding one of the creatures. Oss reveals that he was expecting Nomi and her child and invites them inside.

Meanwhile, acting on Bogga the Hutt's orders, Gudb and a group of gangsters locate and infiltrate the Lightside Explorer, destroying 3D0 in their attempt to steal the Adegan crystals. While Oss is feeding his "beast friend," Nomi shares the story of her husband Andur's death with Oss, questioning why he perished despite his connection to the Force. Oss explains that a Jedi's focus is crucial and that distractions can lead to their downfall, a weakness that some adversaries of the Jedi have exploited throughout history.

Nomi also recounts how she killed two of her husband's murderers and is following Andur's wishes to deliver the crystals to Ambria. Before she can give the crystals to Oss, they hear a disturbance. Bogga and his henchmen have hunted and killed a staga. Before they can take it aboard Bogga's sail barge, Oss confronts them but is overpowered and knocked down.

Before the gangsters can eliminate Oss Wilum, his "beast friend" attacks them, using his Force abilities to overwhelm them, causing Bogga and his followers to retreat. To Nomi's astonishment, Oss thanks his "Master" for demonstrating that a lightsaber is not the only weapon. When Nomi inquires why he refers to the creature as "Master," Oss reveals that the beast is Master Thon, thus beginning the saga of Nomi and her daughter Vima, who would become great Jedi under Master Thon's guidance.
