A spurned rescue

The Jedi in training, Ulic and Cay Qel-Droma along with Tott Doneeta, find themselves crash-landed in the Onderon wilderness after a seeker-torpedo strikes their starship, the Nebulon Ranger. Cay gets to work fixing the damaged lateral fin and sublight transponder, while Tott stumbles upon several Boma creatures within a deserted jungle fortress.

Leveraging his Animal bond Force powers, Tott successfully establishes communication with the Boma, convincing them to escort the group to Beast Lord Modon Kira's stronghold. There, they find Galia in the process of marrying Modon's son, Oron. Ulic's attempt to save her is rejected, as Galia expresses her desire to marry Oron.

The moment of truth

Modon restores order and arranges a wedding feast to engage in discussions with the three Jedi. Modon recounts that, 400 years prior, a Dark Jedi by the name of Freedon Nadd ascended to the throne of Onderon, initiating a prolonged era of darkness within the Iziz royal lineage. Oron informs the Jedi that his grandfather, Drokko Kira, was exiled from Iziz fifty years ago for defying the dark side.

Modon Kira intends to unite the armies of the Beast Lords for a final showdown against Iziz. He seeks the Jedi's assistance in overthrowing Queen Amanoa. In an effort to avert conflict, Ulic suggests employing diplomacy to persuade Amanoa that Galia and Oron's union can bring an end to the Beast Wars. Ulic successfully convinces Modon and Oron to accompany them. Drokko inquires whether the Jedi will join them in waging war against the dark side should their mission fail.

Parleying with the Queen

After Cay repairs the Nebulon Ranger, the Jedi, Galia, and Oron journey back to Iziz with the aim of persuading Queen Amanoa to cease the war. Simultaneously, Modon mobilizes the forces of the Beast Riders for a decisive assault on Iziz. Cay is able to persuade the Onderonian forces to permit them to land at the royal citadel. Queen Amanoa is enraged by her daughter's supposed betrayal through marrying a Beast Rider, and threatens to end her life.

Representing the Jedi Order and the Galactic Republic, Ulic endeavors to convince Queen Amanoa to establish peace with the Beast Riders. Galia attempts to persuade her mother that her marriage to Oron can usher in a new era of peace. Adopting a more assertive stance, Oron warns that the skies will darken with the wings of their war beasts if she refuses to heed their words.

Provoked by Oron's defiance, Queen Amanoa calls upon the spirit of Freedon Nadd and employs Sith magic to engulf them in darkness. The Jedi, Galia, and Oron manage to escape, but Cay finds himself trapped within the throne room. Oron contacts his father to relay that the Jedi have failed and that war is unavoidable.

Battle of Iziz

The combined armies of the Beast Lords and their war beasts commence an attack on Iziz. The Onderonians deploy their wave-weapons, but the Beast Riders are also equipped with firearms. Meanwhile, Cay attempts to compel Queen Amanoa to extinguish the darkness. However, a royal guard shoots him in the hand, causing him to drop his lightsaber, which then slices through the calf of the royal guard. The royal guard's comrade severs his left arm using a vibroblade.

Queen Amanoa ventures deep beneath the palace to Freedon Nadd's tomb, where she harnesses the dark side to demoralize her adversaries. This results in the Beast Riders losing control of their warbeasts. Concurrently, Ulic carries his brother into a dark corridor, where Cay removes a droid's arm and uses it as a replacement.

High above Iziz, Jedi Master Arca Jeth employs his battle meditation to shift the course of the battle, securing victory for the Beast Riders. As a royal guard is about to kill a Beast Rider, Arca's battle meditation empowers the Beast Rider, granting him the advantage over the guard.

Emerging from the palace, Ulic, Cay, Tott, Galia, and Oron discover that Modon's Beast Lords have triumphed in the battle, and the city has surrendered. Shortly thereafter, Master Arca lands his starship SunGem and meets with his apprentices. Arca expresses disappointment that his apprentices, especially Ulic, failed to detect the dark side's influence on Onderon. Arca elucidates the mechanics of battle meditation, a technique he has not yet taught his apprentices.

Exorcising the dark side

In an effort to vanquish the source of the dark side, Ulic, Cay, Tott, Arca, Galia, and Oron descend into Freedon Nadd's mausoleum, where Amanoa is instantly killed by the light emitted by Master Arca. While acknowledging her mother's evil nature, Amanoa is upset that Arca killed her. Arca clarifies that he did not kill her, but that the dark power that sustained her dissipated because the light side is stronger.

After uncovering Freedon Nadd's remains, Arca recounts the history of the Dark Jedi. Four centuries ago, Nadd was seduced by the dark side and became an apprentice to a Dark Lord of the Sith. Unable to become Dark Lord of the Sith himself, Nadd declared himself King of Onderon. Following his death, his tomb became a focal point of dark side energy, ensuring that his power was passed down through generations. While her ancestors were aligned with the dark side, Arca assures Galia that she is free and encourages her to release the past.

Following the conclusion of the Beast Wars, Galia and Oron Kira formalize their marriage under the laws of the Republic, uniting the warring factions of Onderon into a cohesive society. While celebrating with his apprentices, Arca cautions them that the battle against the dark side is ongoing, as Freedon Nadd still has followers within the city, and there are rumors that Galia's father Ommin is still alive. He warns that they have to stay on Iziz for a while.

While speaking with Master Arca, Ulic reflects on Freedon Nadd's past as a Jedi and questions how a Jedi, trained in the ways of the light, can succumb to the dark side. Arca explains that this has occurred on multiple occasions but notes that it is rare for a Jedi to fall to the dark side. He expresses his hope that it will never happen to Ulic.
