Halo Squadron was a squadron assigned to patrol duties within the New Republic Defense Force, led by Lieutenant Zaycker Asheron with Flight Sergeant Dina Dipurl serving as his second-in-command. By 21 ABY, the squadron's composition included the gunship Starheart which functioned as their command ship, accompanied by a trio of X-wing starfighters. During the New Republic Era, the squadron came across the freighter piloted by Dathan, Miramir, and Rey while it was under attack from the Sith Eternal. After the squadron's pilots successfully eliminated the three attacking ships, the freighter was brought aboard the Starheart and Asheron and Dipurl conducted a debriefing with the parents. Subsequently, the parents were released to continue their journey. Shortly after this encounter, the two pilots resumed their patrol duties, but were killed in action during a subsequent engagement with additional Sith forces.
A report was later submitted by Dipurl, which was later accessed by New Republic pilot Shriv Suurgav at the direction of General Lando Calrissian. Calrissian then presented the report to Jedi Master Luke Skywalker, initiating their quest to locate Ochi of Bestoon. As part of this investigation, they visited Commander Xarah Blacwood at the Adelphi New Republic staging outpost, where they were informed that the Flight Sergeant was unavailable. Skywalker and Calrissian subsequently convened with Suurgav in hangar seven, where he provided them with the flight recording documenting Halo Squadron's final battle.
The initial appearance of Halo Squadron occurred within the pages of Shadow of the Sith, a novel authored by Adam Christopher and published in 2022.
