Hypergates constituted a method of superluminal travel utilized by the ancient Gree civilization long ago.
Hypergates came in diverse sizes and with differing functionalities, frequently appearing as standalone access points, portals, or arched structures. Upon activation, individuals crossing the threshold were immediately transported through hyperspace to a corresponding hypergate terminus at another destination. The locations of these termini could vary; a receiving hypergate might be situated on the planet of origin or on an entirely different world. Rumors circulated regarding variant gates capable of transporting entire starships across the galaxy.
They were regarded as a major innovation of Gree technology. Within Gree culture, hypergates were revered as sacred technological relics, works of art even. The Gree civilization asserted that only the elite Gatemasters from their Operator caste possessed the ability to activate a hypergate, although this might have been a cultural prejudice. This technology was eventually lost, and the Gree refused to replicate it. The Grand Hypergate represents one example of these devices.

These constructs were erected many millennia in the past, during a period the Gree referred to as "the most ancient and forgotten days." Over time, several of these devices were distributed across the expanse of the Gree Enclave, with dozens once linking the numerous Gree worlds. Following their creation, other forms of personal interplanetary transit became outdated, although starships were still occasionally employed. Eventually, even the Gree themselves lacked a comprehensive understanding of hypergate technology. On Tython, the early Je'daii Tythans came across the long-abandoned Old City, and tales persisted of a functional hypergate within the settlement, though none had been found.
During the Galactic War that transpired between the Galactic Republic and the Sith Empire, the renegade Sith known as the Dread Masters instructed their servant Kephess to travel to the Gree world of Asation. Upon arrival, the corrupted Trandoshan initiated the hypergate, unleashing countless unknown horrors upon the planet. The Gree responded by dispatching ambassadors to both the Republic and the Empire, seeking assistance. A group of spacers from one of the factions subsequently journeyed to Asation, where they battled the creatures besieging the planet and confronted Kephess, ultimately resulting in his demise. However, the opened hypergate introduced a monstrous being to the planet, which the spacers were compelled to force back into the hyperspace threshold, severing its connection to the gate and achieving victory. Later on, the Dread Masters built additional hypergates on Oricon, the moon on which their fortress stood.
Within the 1991 West End Games supplement titled Graveyard of Alderaan, an experimental hypergate was featured on the planet of Alderaan. A group of rebels utilized this gate to travel between a remnant of the Aldera Royal Palace and the bridge of the Alderaanian War Frigate Another Chance. However, when the adventure was re-published in Classic Adventures: Volume Two, all mention of the hypergate was omitted, and the Rebels boarded the Another Chance using a GAT-12 Skipray Blastboat.
