A mega-ion cannon, alternatively referred to as a superheavy ion cannon or an ion pulse-cannon, represented a sizable ion cannon employed by the Separatist forces. Its capability lay in discharging a substantial, circular energy burst capable of disrupting the energy infrastructure of entire fleets. The Subjugator-class heavy cruiser superweapon known as Malevolence was outfitted with a pair of mega-ion cannons, positioned individually on its left and right sides. Nevertheless, the Malevolence met its end through a collision with the Dead Moon of Antar within the Prindaar system.

Some years afterward, amidst the Galactic Civil War, General Airen Cracken, who served as the Chief of Rebel Intelligence for the Rebel Alliance, documented his thoughts on Imperial weapons initiatives in a communication to Commander-in-Chief Mon Mothma. Within this document, he scrutinized the mega-ion cannons present on the Malevolence, expressing his intrigue regarding the Imperial Navy's choice not to incorporate such technology into their own military vessels.
