The Junkyard, a field composed of asteroids, could be found situated within the Rhigal system. The Chiss Ascendancy, located in the Unknown Regions, was where this system resided.
Many centuries prior to the supposed banishment of Senior Captain Mitth'raw'nuruodo from the Ascendancy, the Ufsa family gathered the asteroids of the Junkyard together for the purpose of mining operations. The most mineral-rich area of the Junkyard was originally a region known as the Gem. By the time Thrawn was exiled, the Junkyard's resources for mining had been largely exhausted, especially within the Gem. However, rumors about newly discovered mineral veins occasionally circulated within the Ascendancy.
Shortly after the Hoxim incident, at least six Grysk warships, under the command of "Jixtus," were employed by Patriarch Clarr'ivl'exow, also known as "Rivlex," of the Clarr family. These warships were positioned in the Junkyard in a low-power state, where spies from the Stybla family detected them. The Patriel of Rhigar, the primary planet in the Rhigal system, then dispatched the coordinates of the Junkyard to the Orisson, where Captain Clarr'os'culry, known as "Roscu," encountered the Grysk ships. This encounter was reminiscent of the Battle Dreadnought that the Chiss heavy cruiser Grayshrike had encountered above Sunrise.
The novel Thrawn Ascendancy: Lesser Evil, released in 2021 and written by Timothy Zahn, marked the first appearance of the Junkyard. This novel served as the concluding installment of Star Wars: The Ascendancy Trilogy.
