Clarr'os'culry

Captain Clarr'os'culry, also known as Roscu (her core name) and later given the title The One They Could Not Kill, was a Chiss woman belonging to the Clarr family. While serving in the Chiss Expansionary Defense Fleet, she was stationed on the Parala, working alongside Senior Commander Mitth'raw'nuruodo (whose core name was "Thrawn") and Captain Irizi'ar'alani. Shortly after the pirate attack on the Garwian planet of Stivic, she left her position in the Expansionary Defense Fleet. She then became the captain of the Orisson within her family's fleet. During her time in the family fleet, she encountered Generalirius Nakirre and "Jixtus." She also aided Thrawn in his efforts against the Grysk fleet, eventually being offered the role of Second Officer on the Venturous under Admiral Dy'lothe.

Biographical Information

Service on the Parala

From approximately 39 BBY to 19 BBY, Clarr'os'culry (Roscu), holding the rank of Mid Captain, served with Senior Commander Mitth'raw'nuru Thrawn and Senior Captain Irizi'ar'alani (Ziara) on the Parala. While Roscu was stationed on the warship, the Parala received an urgent distress call from Security Officer Frangelic of the Garwian Unity. Frangelic reported an ongoing pirate attack at the Garwian colony world of Stivic, specifically the merchant-hub station orbiting the planet. Thrawn, who was temporarily in charge of the bridge when the message arrived, believed the pirates were Lioaoin and decided to respond. Roscu criticized Thrawn's decision, citing the Chiss protocols for preemptive strikes and stating that the Ascendancy did not involve itself in alien affairs. Upon their arrival, Roscu remarked that the station had some appealing cafés. Ziara instructed Roscu to inspect the electrostatic barriers. During Roscu's absence, Thrawn assured Ziara that he could defeat the Lioaoi pirates without damaging the Parala. Ar'alani refused to allow the Parala to directly engage in the battle. However, driven by empathy, she allowed Thrawn to secretly provide the Garwians with information on the Lioaoi tactics and how to counter them. She sent Thrawn away from the bridge to "check the ranging lasers." After Thrawn's departure, Roscu questioned Ziara about removing Thrawn from the bridge. Ziara responded that she had sent him to inspect the weapons sensor systems. Roscu expressed her hope that the Parala would not participate in the battle, reiterating the preemptive strike protocols. Suddenly, the battle shifted in favor of the Garwians, who successfully countered the Lioaoin pirates. After the battle, Ziara asked Roscu if she was relieved, as the cafés she had been concerned about were still intact.

Service to the Clarr Family

Following the pirate attack on the Garwians, Roscu resigned from the Expansionary Defense Fleet and became a captain in the Clarr family fleet, where she defended her family's interests. During the Chiss Ascendancy crisis in 18 BBY, the Kilji war cruiser Whetstone arrived at Rhigar. Previous attempts to meet with a Patriarch had failed, and they sought to speak with Patriarch Clarr'ivl'exow (Core name "Rivlex"). However, Roscu informed the aliens—the leader of the Kilji Illumine, Generalirius Nakirre, and the Grysk agent "Jixtus"—that they would negotiate with her instead, which they accepted. As Roscu prepared her new ship, the Orisson, and a shuttle to join the aliens on board the Kilji warship, she learned that Admiral Dy'lothe and the Venturous were en route to Rhigar to assess the Kilji threat. Therefore, Roscu wanted the aliens to leave before the Admiral's arrival. Subsequently, the captain boarded the Whetstone and was greeted by Nakirre, the taller alien, and Jixtus, the significantly smaller one. The Grysk offered her a refreshment, but Roscu declined, prompting Jixtus to compliment her directness. Later, the aliens presented a recording of the Xodlak Dasklo families conducting a military exercise—which was actually the Hoxim incident. Upon seeing the families preparing for "war," Roscu told Jixtus that she would purchase the information after consulting with her Patriarch, Rivlex.

Before her departure, Jixtus offered Generalirius Nakirre's defense forces to the Clarr, and the Kilji added that they possessed "many mighty ships of war." Roscu declined, stating that she would consider it, while privately thinking that the Kiljis might be effective against the Forty, but would be overwhelmed by the Nine Ruling Families. As she prepared to leave, Jixtus informed her that he would not reveal the system where the exercise took place, as it ensured her return with payment. Roscu then told the Grysk that she would bring enough to purchase everything he had.

Targeted for Elimination

The Setup

Following their meeting with Roscu, Jixtus informed Generalirius Nakirre that they would travel to the Chiss world of Ornfra. The Grysk then expressed his satisfaction with Nakirre's ambition to be an equal to the Grysks and added that they would revisit that topic after the Chiss were defeated. Nakirre expressed his disapproval of linking the Grysk-Kilji schedule to Roscu's movements. Jixtus then inquired when Nakirre believed Roscu's travels would end, to which Nakirre replied that it was now, which Jixtus confirmed.

Ziinda's Intervention

Shortly after the Grayshrike's arrival at Ornfra, the stronghold of the Dasklo family, who were rivals of Roscu's family, the Orisson arrived. Two Dasklo destroyers confronted the Orisson. However, Roscu, having been informed of a "Mitth spy platform" by Jixtus, jumped directly in front of the "spy platform," which was actually an asteroid missile platform. This allowed a Grysk freighter stationed near the platform, which Ziinda had been alerted to by System Patrol, to take advantage of the situation. After Ziinda attempted to warn Roscu, Roscu severed the communication, spotting the freighter nearby. As the Clarr captain continued to ignore Ziinda, the Senior Captain ordered her crew to fire across the Orisson's bow, which successfully gained Roscu's attention.

After Roscu inquired about Ziinda's actions, she received information about previous encounters with missile platforms and the true nature of the "spy platform." Thanks to this information, Ziinda successfully convinced Roscu. However, when the asteroid rotated, aligning the missile launcher perfectly to fire at the Clarr warship, it remained dormant. Ziinda realized that the Grysks' inaction was intentional, not due to a malfunction. As two Dasklo destroyers attempted to engage the Orisson, the Grayshrike launched plasma spheres at one of the destroyers. This fooled the Grysks into believing that the Senior Captain intended to eliminate the Dasklo. Instead, the plasma spheres disabled the freighter, which shortly after self-destructed, causing the missile platform to explode.

Rivlex's Scheme

After safely leaving Ornfra, Roscu returned to Rhigar, where she met with Patriarch Rivlex. The Patriarch informed Roscu that she had failed in her two objectives at Ornfra: identifying the Mitth spy platform and capturing the Dasklo destroyers. Roscu attempted to defend herself by sharing the records from the Grayshrike, but the Patriarch dismissed her claims that it was an "asteroid missile platform." She then tried to cite fleet protocols, but these were also dismissed by the Patriarch. Rivlex then revealed that he had made a deal, and that they now possessed the most powerful fleet in the Ascendancy, composed of Grysk Shatter-class and StoneCrusher-class WarMasters provided by Jixtus, which were actually part of the Grysk's own fleet. Roscu questioned whether they were following the Ascendancy's rules, to which the Clarr patriarch replied that the Clarr could create their own rules, like the Defense Hierarchy Council.

Roscu then departed and met with Raamas, who informed her of the location of the Patriarch's new fleet. They arrived at the "Junkyard," where they discovered six Grysk battleships. Raamas and Roscu reviewed the Grayshrike's reports on the ships they had encountered over Sunrise and other locations, confirming that they were the same warships Ziinda had previously faced. Raamas and Roscu discussed the ships' origins, with Roscu suggesting that they belonged to Jixtus or, at least, the same faction as Jixtus, or that they originated from the same shipyards. After learning about the Patriarch's acquisitions, the Orisson jumped to hyperspace.

Confronting Malevolence

After the Orisson returned from hyperspace, Roscu confronted Rivlex, informing him of her failures. She also promoted Raamas to captain, removing all rank and title from Roscu, and ordering the new captain of the Orisson to transport Roscu to the homestead via shuttle. Additionally, she ordered the Clarr warship to return to Ornfra to obtain proof that Rivlex needed to discredit the Dasklo. Adrer Raamas confirmed the orders and inquired whether the Orisson should report to the Clarr's new fleet or directly to the Patriarch. Rivlex insisted that they report directly to him. Despite Raamas's attempt to grant the Orisson's crew a break from space, the Patriarch insisted on obtaining the proof immediately, without delay. Shortly after the confrontation, Raamas ordered his pilot to jump the Orisson to hyperspace, prompting another question regarding Roscu's passage to the homestead. Raamas pretended to be unaware of that order. Roscu questioned the captain's actions, reminding him to follow the Patriarch's orders. Raamas then informed Roscu that he would not obey a Patriarch who had purchased an alien fleet that had previously attacked the Chiss, and removed a member of the Clarr fleet because they did not fight the Dasklo, all to exact his personal revenge on the Dasklo. Despite Roscu's attempts to persuade Raamas to follow the Patriarch's orders, he refused and reinstated her as the captain of the Orisson.

Raamas then ordered the Orisson's crew to travel to Schesa as quickly as possible. He then informed the crew of the reason for their journey: to rendezvous with Thrawn's fleet to defeat Jixtus and the approaching Grysk Hegemony forces that planned to destroy the Chiss, as well as to eliminate Nakirre.

A Final "Refreshment"

Targeting Nakirre

Thrawn (pictured) and the Kilji vassals were able to destroy Jixtus

The Chiss fleet, comprised of Chiss Expansionary Defense Fleet officers and warships, commanded by Senior Captain Thrawn aboard the Springhawk, assembled at Schesa. There, they formulated their strategy for the upcoming battle against Jixtus and the Grysks at Sunrise. The fleet would scatter debris throughout the Sunrise system and power down most of the ships' systems to create the illusion of defeat, enticing the Grysks to approach.

Later, Generalirius Nakirre, Jixtus, and Qilori—the pilot of the Whetstone—traveled to the Sunrise system, where they observed a seemingly destroyed Chiss fleet. The Springhawk then initiated communication with the Whetstone, inquiring about Nakirre's presence. Nakirre confirmed his presence and asked if Thrawn was also there, receiving confirmation. Thrawn then informed Nakirre that the Kiljis had arrived too late to bring their enlightenment. He then asked if Jixtus was still traveling with Nakirre, receiving confirmation from the Grysk. Jixtus then posed various questions to Thrawn. Thrawn confirmed that the Magys and Magysines had been located and were aboard his ship. Jixtus continued by asserting that Thrawn had nothing left to fight with and had already lost. However, he also acknowledged that many survivors were aboard the Vigilant. Thrawn instructed him to leave the dead and dying in peace and to fight him directly. Jixtus questioned whether it would be beneficial to alleviate their suffering. However, he contradicted himself and stated that Thrawn was the one he intended to kill.

Their conversation continued, with Thrawn stating that he would not surrender the Magys and Magysines to the Grysk, as he lacked the patience to train them to their full potential. Jixtus then revealed that he had, in fact, trained General Yiv the Benevolent, and that the Benevolent's training had required considerable time and patience. Thrawn refuted this, asserting that the Nikardun had simply lashed out at everyone in his path. Jixtus once again attempted to claim victory in the debate about patience, but failed again. Thrawn then told Jixtus that sending Yiv against the Paataatus had been a grave mistake. He continued by informing Nakirre that he had sent the Kilhorde against several impoverished nations south and southeast of the Chiss Ascendancy, which had inadvertently positioned them north and northwest of the Paataatus Hiveborn. Nakirre then asked Thrawn what he was implying, receiving confirmation of his fears: the Hammer had been captured by Thrawn, and the data recovered had allowed him to provide the Paataatus with extensive information on the Kilhorde, enabling them to attack and destroy the Kilhorde. Nakirre denied this, asserting that the Kilhorde was mighty and unshakeable. However, Thrawn convinced Nakirre of the Kilhorde's defeat. Nakirre then screamed at Jixtus, blaming him for the Kilhorde's defeat due to his failure to view the Kilji Illumine as allies. Jixtus then shot Nakirre in the chest, killing him. This caused all vassals aboard to hunch over their stations, as they had lost their master.

Ending the Threat

Afterward, Thrawn asked Jixtus if he wished to surrender, as he had already lost. Jixtus then escaped the Whetstone and attempted to reach his flagship, the FateSpinner, to command the Grysk fleet. As Roscu observed the escape pod heading toward the lead Grysk warship, she ordered the Orisson's crew to maintain laser fire and prepare three breachers, which she later fired at the SkySweep as the battleship had been damaged by a Chiss light cruiser, destroying an entire section of the battleship. Ar'alani informed Roscu that she had to play "hunter" while the Vigilant played "prey." As the Grysk StoneCrusher-class WarMaster Armageddon pursued the Springhawk, the Orisson accelerated toward the Chiss heavy cruiser. Ziinda's Grayshrike positioned itself directly in front of the Armageddon, ready to destroy it. The Grayshrike fired two breachers, which collided directly with the Orisson's, shattering the metals and creating a thick cloud of acid, which the Armageddon crashed into. Although Ziinda offered to assist the Orisson, Thrawn declined and instructed Ziinda to help Csap'ro'strob (Core name "Apros"), as Jixtus had discovered why his warships could not jump to hyperspace, which was due to Apros' gunboat carrying a gravity well projector. As the Grysk battleships pursued Apros, twelve new warships appeared.

Warships from the Garwian Unity, Vak Combine, and Paccosh arrived next to the gunboat, allowing it to escape and opening fire on the Grysk warships. After the alien warships left the Grysks for scrap, the FateSpinner rushed toward the Vigilant. Ar'alani requested assistance from the Springhawk, but its thrusters had been damaged, and the Orisson was preoccupied with the BattleChiefs. Then, Apros and Ziinda joined forces and ran parallel to the FateSpinner. Apros was shielded by the Grayshrike, preventing Jixtus from destroying the gravity well projector and thus preventing him from escaping. However, Jixtus quickly disintegrated what was left of the Grayshrike, almost destroying it in the process. However, Qilori, having realized the consequences for the Navigators' Guild and himself if Jixtus survived, assumed leadership of the Kilji vassals aboard the Whetstone and ordered them to disintegrate the starboard aft flank of the FateSpinner, forcing Jixtus to destroy his forces, and himself, just before proclaiming that "the Grysks would come back."

The One They Could Not Kill

Following the battle, Roscu spoke with Rivlex, informing the Patriarch of her potential appointment as the second officer of Admiral Dy'lothe's Venturous, which was stationed at Rhigar. She also attempted to persuade the Patriarch to resign from his position. After the call, Patriel Clarr'etu'vilimt (Core name "Retuvili") informed her of her new title, "The One They Could Not Kill," referencing the Grysks' failed attempts to kill her. Roscu then informed Retuvili of Rivlex's stance on resigning.

Later, Roscu, along with all of Thrawn's Chiss allies and enemies, attended Thrawn's exile ceremony, where he was banished.

Personality and Attributes

Captain Clarr'os'culry was a Chiss woman of average height for her species, taller than a Grysk but significantly shorter than a Kilji like Nakirre. She was inherently distrustful, particularly towards aliens such as Jixtus and Nakirre, but also towards Chiss who were not members of the Clarr family. She was deeply devoted to her family, prioritizing family and its reputation above all else. She wore a dress uniform during her meeting with Nakirre.

Equipment

Roscu utilized a Hold-out blaster and commanded the Orisson.

Behind the Scenes

Roscu made her debut in the 2020 novel Thrawn Ascendancy: Chaos Rising, the inaugural volume of Timothy Zahn's Star Wars: Thrawn Ascendancy Trilogy.
