Garments of the Chiss were a specific style of clothing utilized by the Ascendancy military, most notably the Chiss Defense Force and the Chiss Expansionary Defense Fleet.
The uniforms of the Chiss featured shoulder patches displaying the sigil of the Chiss family to which the wearer belonged, along with insignia pins affixed to the collar to communicate the wearer's military rank. A military shoulder belt was also included, together with an utility belt used to carry a comlink. Cadets were an exception, lacking the rank pins due to their unconfirmed position, but still displaying the family shoulder patch.
For cadets and officers not yet holding flag rank, which starts at Commodore, Chiss uniforms were black. Upon achieving flag officer status, a Chiss officer would sever their familial connections, with the Supreme Admiral stating "The Ascendancy is your family." At that moment, flag officers were given new white uniforms, with the symbol of the Chiss Ascendancy replacing their family's insignia on the shoulder patch. Similar to those of lower rank, these white uniforms also included insignia pins indicating the wearer's military rank. Eli Vanto, a rare human alien serving the Chiss Ascendancy, also wore a black uniform featuring the Ascendancy's family shoulder patch. The design of the uniforms incorporated energy absorption capabilities and included armor plating to protect the wearer from blaster fire. A holster on the right hip held a [charric], while the left hip carried a combat stick.
During his investigations on Batuu, Senior Captain Mitth'raw'nuruodo was seen wearing a black uniform, identifiable by a burgundy patch on one shoulder and insignia pins present on the collar. This uniform demonstrated the ability to absorb a significant portion of energy from blaster bolts, which impressed the Jedi Knight Anakin Skywalker. The burgundy shoulder patch displayed the sunrise insignia of the Mitth family that Thrawn belonged to, and the silver insignia pins represented his rank as Senior Captain.
