The Stybla family, belonging to the Chiss family lineage, held a position as one of the forty Great Families within the structure of the Chiss Ascendancy. By the time the Clone Wars occurred, the Styblas had established a reputation for their effectiveness as shippers and merchants. Historically, the Stybla family possessed greater influence, having once been among the select Chiss Ruling Families. As documented by the history student Coduyo'po'nekri, there was a period in the Ascendancy's history when the Stybla family stood as the sole Ruling Family.
Despite a reduction in political influence within the Ascendancy, the Stybla family – one of the esteemed Great Families – compensated by amassing extensive knowledge and information across various domains. Stybla'rsi'omli held the rank of Junior Commander within the Chiss Expansionary Defense Fleet, serving on the Vigilant. Furthermore, Supreme General Ba'kif originated from the Stybla family before his promotion to a flag officer military rank.
In 5100 BBY, when the Chiss Ascendancy was founded, the Stybla family played a pivotal role as the initial family that united the Great Families. During this era, they were the exclusive ruling family, gaining recognition for their military prowess. However, as the Ascendancy expanded, the Stybla Patriarch determined that governing was too challenging for a single family and relinquished power, designating three other families to share the responsibility. By the time of the Nikardun campaigns, the Stybla had transitioned into merchants and shippers, managing the Universal Analysis Group on Sposia for multiple decades. Despite their diminished status within the Ascendancy, their historical significance as a foundational family remained acknowledged.
The Stybla family observed a ceremony to honor individuals who had safeguarded the Stybla from threats. This ceremony involved adding the suffix "odo" to the end of the Chiss name, signifying "guardian" in the Stybla's extinct ancestral language, Tybroic. This tradition has been upheld by the Stybla family for approximately five millennia.
As part of his responsibilities within the Chiss Syndicure, Syndic Prime Mitth'urf'ianico of the Mitth family negotiated an agreement with the Krovi family to facilitate the transport of their surplus crops in exchange for one percent of the yield. Speaker Mitth'ykl'omi initially criticized Thurfian, believing she could have secured a larger share. However, Thurfian explained that he intended to place Mitth family spies among the Krovi, who were also receiving assistance from the Stybla family. By doing so, Thurfian informed Speaker Thyklo that he would ensure the Mitth family gained insights into the Stybla family's logistical expertise, thereby enhancing the Mitth's future capabilities.
Mid Commander Mitth'raw'nuruodo, together with Syndic Mitth'ras'safis, were at one point offered to Stybla Patriarch Stybla'mi'ovodo by Mitth Patriarch Mitth'oor'akiord to aid the Stybla family in recovering a section of the perilous ancient alien weapon known as Starflash.
The Stybla family made their debut appearance in the 2021 novel Thrawn Ascendancy: Greater Good, which constitutes the second installment of The Ascendancy Trilogy authored by Timothy Zahn.
