Plot summary

After uncovering Darth Wredd's scheme to assault Empress Marasiah Fel, the youthful Imperial Knight Jao Assam and his companion, a junk dealer named Ania Solo, set out to locate the renegade Sith. Their mission brings them to the Nalydian planet of Nalyd. Jao and Ania endeavor to interrogate Dieben, an associate of Wredd, concerning Darth Wredd's whereabouts. With Dieben facing imminent execution, Ania and Jao liberate him from custody. However, Dieben meets his end during the escape, unable to share crucial details. Confronted by the Nalydian authorities, Ania cleverly resolves their predicament by emphasizing Jao's exceptional combat skills as an Imperial Knight. In exchange for returning Dieben's body, the Nalydian authorities disclose that Dieben was en route to Dac, the contaminated homeworld of the Mon Calamari, where he supposedly had connections with "influential allies."

Despite Jao's reservations about finding Dieben there, they opt to journey to Dac, lacking any alternative leads regarding the rogue Sith, Wredd. Upon their arrival at the devastated Mon Calamari Orbital Shipyards, their spacecraft is invaded by Dac pirate droids, who disable its electronic systems and stabilization mechanisms. Subsequently, they are guided into a docking bay where pirates storm their ship. Nevertheless, Jao and Ania subdue the pirates and appropriate their attire. While navigating the interior of the Mon Calamari Shipyards, Jao and Ania unearth a pirate organization exploiting enslaved Mon Calamari and Quarren refugees to construct a fleet of starships. During their exploration of the shipyards, they encounter two enslaved individuals, Luen and [Tikin](/article/tikin], who verify that the pirates are employing a deceitful scheme to attract Mon Calamari and Quarren refugees to the Calamari system.

Jao instructs his Imperial communications droid to transmit an urgent distress signal to the Triumvirate authorities stationed on Coruscant. Although Ania expresses concern for Jao's safety, he asserts that the threat posed by the pirates to the galaxy supersedes his personal well-being. Soon after, Ania and her comrades find themselves pursued by pirates. Following a high-speed chase through the shipyards, they unexpectedly encounter the Sith Darth Luft, a member of the One Sith, who reveals that Darth Wredd is not present on the Dac system. Darth Luft then hurls Ania and her companions through a concealed trapdoor, leading them into an escape pod. Subsequently, the escape pod is ejected into the toxic oceans of Dac.
