Newland
Newland, who was also known as Marquand, was a human male character who belonged to the Galactic Empire. During the time of the Galactic Civil War, he possessed the rank of major. He participated in the Battle of Endor which occurred in 4 ABY, serving within Tempest Scout 2, which was an All Terrain Scout Transport that also included Lieutenant Blanaid.
Biography
During the events of the Battle of Endor, the Wookiee known as Chewbacca and two Ewoks made a landing on the top of Tempest Scout 2, which was the All Terrain Scout Transport where Newland and Blanaid were stationed. One of the Ewoks then showed itself in front of the viewports of the AT-ST, taunting the walker drivers inside. Upon seeing this, Newland gave Blanaid immediate orders to get the Ewok away from their walker. However, when Blanaid looked out of the cockpit's top hatch of the walker, Chewbacca, the Wookiee, pulled the lieutenant out and threw her off. This situation allowed the Wookiee's Ewok allies to get into the walker cockpit and knock Newland unconscious in order to take control of the Imperial machine.
Later on, during the course of the battle, Han Solo put on Newland's uniform and helmet as a disguise. He used this disguise to trick Major Hewex, the commander in charge of the Death Star's shield generator, into opening the doors of the bunker, which then allowed the Rebels to gain access to the control room.
Behind the scenes
The role of Newland was portrayed by Richard Marquand, who also directed Return of the Jedi. Within the Legends continuity, the character was originally named Marquand, sharing a name with the director. However, this was changed to Newland in the new Star Wars canon. The name Marquand was later used by Atomic Mass Games, though.
