Mission to Xo

During the Imperial Civil War, specifically in 11 ABY, Kir Kanos, a former member of the Imperial Guardsman, embarked on a mission to Xo. The purpose of this undertaking was to save Mirith Sinn, a Commander in the New Republic, who was being held on Xo, the homeworld of the Zanibar.

Prelude

Commander Sinn, while investigating a string of pirate attacks targeting New Republic supply shipments, infiltrated the court of Grappa, a Hutt. She posed as someone seeking revenge against Kir Kanos for the death of her second-in-command, Sish Sadeet, a Trandoshan. Within Grappa's entourage, Sinn discovered Feena D'Asta, a member of the Imperial Interim Ruling Council, held captive on Smarck. This led her to uncover a conspiracy involving the Hutt and Black Sun to replace D'Asta with a clone. However, before Sinn could relay this information, she was betrayed by her former subordinate, Lieutenant Massimo, who exposed her deception to Grappa. In turn, Massimo was also betrayed; he and Sinn were handed over to the Zanibar to satisfy the Hutt's debt of providing subjects for their sacrificial rituals.

Unknown to both Sinn and Grappa, Kanos had infiltrated Grappa's organization himself, operating as the bounty hunter "Kenix Kil," with the assistance of Tav Kennede. Upon hearing about Sinn's capture, Kanos pursued the Zanibar transport to Xo, utilizing Sinn's A-wing interceptor. He was motivated by a sense of obligation to repay her for Sadeet's death.

The mission

After landing the A-wing at a distance, Kanos approached the Zanibar village on foot. He discovered it was mostly empty, as the majority of the villagers were already assembled for the ritual. Donning the attire of a Zanibar guard, Kanos found the ceremony underway, with Massimo prepared as the initial sacrifice. After locating and freeing Sinn, Kanos escaped with her towards the concealed interceptor, pursued by the Zanibar who had noticed Sinn's disappearance.

With Sinn piloting the A-wing (designed for a single pilot), Kanos was compelled to hold onto the exterior, which prevented the ship from escaping the planet's atmosphere. A Zanibar transport in pursuit then shot down the interceptor, injuring Sinn and leaving them stranded in the jungles of Xo. As they made their way to an elevated extraction point to contact Kennede, Sinn was attacked by a carnivorous plant, but Kanos rescued her. He remarked that it was the second time he had saved her that day. This led to an argument about their respective debts to each other and Sinn's pledge to kill Kanos. Setting aside their differences to subdue an attacking local creature, Kanos suggested they consider their debts settled.

Sinn observed that Kanos' resourcefulness was reminiscent of her deceased husband, Jahren Sinn, a farmer and local leader on Nez Peron who was killed for rebelling against the Empire to prevent his people from starving. Kanos attempted to justify the Empire's actions, but Sinn showed him a hologram of Darth Vader violently killing her husband, urging Kanos to reconsider his loyalty to his Emperor. He overloaded the power regulator of his blaster rifle to provide heat through the night.

The next morning, the pair reached the extraction point, a pre-Republic fortress built by humans, only to be ambushed by their Zanibar pursuers. Overwhelmed, Kanos and Sinn were rescued by Tav Kennede's arrival in a tandem X-wing starfighter, which scattered the Zanibar forces long enough for Sinn to board. Kanos, however, was captured by his attackers and instructed Kennede to leave with Sinn, remaining on Xo in the hands of the Zanibar.

Aftermath

Sinn's experience with Kanos on Xo lessened her hatred for him related to Sadeet's murder. She also noticed similarities between Kanos and her late husband, which further increased her attraction to him. Kennede, temporarily aligned with the New Republic, explained Kanos' motives to Sinn. He then flew with the Commander again in the Battle of Smarck, during the subsequent rescue of Kanos, and as an escort for Feena D'Asta.

The Zanibar handed Kanos over to Grappa the Hutt, seeking his assistance in claiming the substantial imperial bounty on the former Guardsman. The loss of Kanos to Sinn's New Republic strike force, combined with Grappa's resulting inability to secure the Zanibar's bounty, directly contributed to the Hutt's eventual demise.
