Niriian was a female Togruta serving the New Republic as a Science officer. She maintained a romantic involvement with Ensign Deltura.
In the time period following the Battle of Endor, Niriian held the position of Science officer on the New Republic Defense Fleet's Oculus, a Carrack-class light cruiser. Her romantic partner was Ensign Deltura. Acting under Deltura's instructions, Niriian deployed the Viper probe droid designated BALK1 to investigate the debris field resulting from the Kinro comet's impact, an event that devastated the Core Worlds long ago. Following the probe's launch, she started to observe the atmospheric information it gathered. Subsequently, Deltura extended an invitation for a shared dinner and intimate encounter, which Niriian accepted.
Later on, Niriian and Deltura were together when they used a hologram to notify Admiral Ackbar about the destruction of a transport carrying New Republic Special Forces soldiers, as recorded by one of their probe droids orbiting Akiva. After analyzing the footage, Niriian and Deltura came to the conclusion that Sergeant Major Jom Barell was the only one to survive the incident. Niriian thought that Barell's chances of survival were slim because he had deployed his parawings prematurely. Ackbar then gave Niriian and Deltura the order to continue monitoring the situation unfolding on Akiva.
Contrary to Niriian's prediction, Jom managed to survive the fall and was instrumental in the ultimate success of the rebellion on Akiva.
Niriian possessed a detached and efficient demeanor in her professional dealings. She scrutinized those around her, observing them with the same detached interest as one might examine winged-insects displayed on a collection board. She typically wore her head-tails secured back with a simple, dark-colored cord.
Niriian's introduction to the Star Wars expanded universe came in Chuck Wendig's 2015 novel, Aftermath, which served as a tie-in to the Journey to Star Wars: The Force Awakens promotional campaign.
