The Togruta were a sentient species of humanoids who possessed distinct traits, including vibrantly colorful skin, sizable montrals, lekku (also known as head tails), and unique white facial markings. They originated on the planet Shili, situated within the Expansion Region. While Shili served as their homeworld, a separate colony of around 50,000 Togruta also existed on Kiros, another planet in the Expansion Region. Notable Togruta individuals include Jedi Master Shaak Ti, the Jedi Master known as Jora Malli, Supreme Chancellor Kirames Kaj, and the Padawan Ahsoka Tano.

Originally from the planet Shili in the Expansion Region, the Togruta species of sentient humanoids eventually spread across the galaxy. Their skin exhibited a wide spectrum of colors, such as orange, red, white, and yellow. This diverse coloration developed as a natural adaptation, providing camouflage against predators.
A distinguishing feature of Togrutas, unlike many humanoids, was their multiple stomachs. Their most prominent characteristic was the presence of unique cranial structures: a pair of large, conical horns known as montrals situated on top of their skull, and three lekku, or headtails, that extended downwards. The lekku and montrals of a Togruta typically grew until they reached adulthood, with females generally possessing longer lekku compared to males. However, the montrals of males tended to be more branched. The montrals served as an auditory system, enabling them to perceive the movement of objects in their vicinity through echolocation. This echolocation ability evolved to aid in hunting and was remarkably effective, allowing them to detect objects up to 82 feet (25 meters away. Togrutas also possessed six holes (three on each side) located where the lekku connected to the jawline. The function of these external holes remains uncertain, but their location suggests they may be ears.

Togruta often established their settlements in mountainous and elevated terrains. For example, the Togruta immigrants residing in the colonies on Kiros constructed their homes on cliffs. These dwellings were created with an emphasis on artistic expression and aesthetic appeal. Typically, Togruta communicated using both Galactic Basic Standard and their native language, known as Togruti.
Members of this species, especially those from Shili, displayed a strong sense of protectiveness towards their planet and its surrounding moons, considering the land beneath them to be sacred. Consequently, many Togruta chose to remain barefoot, only wearing boots when traveling off-world.
A government was established on Shili, which could be headed by a queen. The queen of the Togruta government on Shili also held the titles of Regasa of Shili, Supreme Huntress of the United Tribes, and Ruler of Togrutas. The government included the Togruta military and the Togruta guard. The Royal Togruta Fleet consisted of numerous Togruta warships, and the military forces were further supported by the intelligence services and the security council. The Togruta maintained a royal court, and the government employed an ambassador and multiple ministers. In contrast, the Togruta on the artisan colony on Kiros developed their society without weapons, focusing instead on artistic pursuits and beauty rather than warfare.
Shili was renowned for producing highly dramatic holovids. One of the signs in Shili's zodiac system was called Ai, characterized by wisdom, charisma, and exceptional virility. The constellation representing this sign was formed from blue dwarf stars, and individuals born under Ai also had the sign Genry on Coruscant.

Around 382 BBY during the High Republic Era, the Togruta government was involved in a conflict with the Galactic Republic and Jedi Order. By 231 BBY, still within the High Republic period, Shili's Togruta were governed by a monarchy led by the Togruta queen, Elarec Yovet. At this time, the Togruta were not yet members of the Republic, and Jedi Master Stellan Gios believed that the Togruta's respect for the Jedi was the only thing preventing them from openly declaring war against the Republic. Jora Malli, a Togruta Jedi Master, served on the Order's Jedi High Council but was killed during the Battle of Kur.
Supreme Chancellor Lina Soh's diplomatic efforts resulted in a Togruta delegation, led by Regasa Elarec Yovet, visiting the Republic Fair as part of Soh's Great Works initiative. In 231 BBY, during the Nihil attack on Valo at the Republic Fair, the Royal Togruta Fleet and military personnel responded to the crisis, reinforcing Republic forces and repelling the Nihil. Following this event, Regasa Yovet aimed to forge an alliance with the Republic and potentially strengthen ties, despite opposition within the Togruta government.
Eventually, in 40 BBY, the Togruta Kirames Kaj held the position of Supreme Chancellor of the Galactic Republic. During the period following the Invasion of Naboo, several Togruta were members of the Jedi Order, including Jedi Master Shaak Ti and the Jedi Initiate Ashla. Shaak Ti was assigned to oversee the training of Republic clone trooper on Kamino.

The Togruta became central to the Clone Wars conflict through events such as the conquest of Kiros, the battle on Kiros, and the subsequent Battle of Kadavo. These battles stemmed from the Zygerrian Slave Empire's efforts to expand slavery operations with the backing of the Confederacy of Independent Systems. Zygerrian and CIS forces occupied the neutral artisan colony on Kiros, enslaving its 50,000 Togruta inhabitants, including Governor Gupat Roshti. Forces from the Grand Army of the Republic later arrived at the deserted Togruta settlement, destroying the Separatist Droid Army forces and defeating the Zygerrian commander. The Jedi Generals Obi-Wan Kenobi and Anakin Skywalker embarked on a mission to Zygerria to locate the missing Togruta colonists.
Skywalker's Togruta padawan, Ahsoka Tano, assisted them, having participated in numerous crucial battles of the war, including the Battle of Christophsis, the Second Battle of Geonosis, and other conflicts. Eventually locating the missing Togruta at the Zygerrian slave processing facility, the Republic launched an operation that freed many of the colonists. In the aftermath, Togruta Governor Roshti decided to join the Republic.

Following the transformation of the Galactic Republic into the Galactic Empire, Togruta Jedi were targeted and killed. The rise of the Empire led to the emergence of resistance groups, including the Partisans and the resistance group on Raada. Several Togruta were involved in these groups, with Ahsoka Tano leading the Raada resistance and later joining the resistance movement led by Alderaanian Senator Bail Prestor Organa. Organa's movement eventually merged with other rebel cells and networks to form the Alliance to Restore the Republic, which included many species, including Togruta, and fought in the Galactic Civil War.
A Togruta also belonged to Lady Qi'ra's anti-Imperial Crimson Dawn organization, listening to her speech rallying the members of the Dawn Fleet before the Battle at Amaxine Station. The fleet engaged with a fleet of Star Destroyers and TIE ships, with some Dawn members boarding the Amaxine Space Station to try and hold back Darth Sidious, Darth Vader, and their escort of death troopers and Emperor's Royal Guards. Ultimately, the Dawn forces were defeated and suffered casualties.
During the later stages of the conflict between the Rebel Alliance and the Empire, the Alliance evolved into the New Republic. Togruta continued their service in the New Republic throughout the war, with the Togruta Auxi Kray Korbin acting as an advisor to New Republic Chancellor Mon Mothma.

At the onset of the Clone Wars, Padawan Ahsoka Tano donned a garnet bandeau and skirt, complemented by white leggings, tall boots, long gloves of the same hue, and a sash. Subsequently, Tano adopted a tunic that exposed her back, paired with grey leggings, armbands, and the same Togruta sash.
Shaak Ti, another Togruta Jedi, typically wore flowing Jedi robes with a dark yellow sash that encircled her waist.
Gupat Roshti, the leader of Kiros during the Clone Wars, sported a long-sleeved shirt adorned with white and gold borders. A purple fabric was draped over his shoulders, a brown belt encircled his hips, and violet pants and light purple boots completed his attire.
Female Togruta frequently wore form-fitting garments that revealed portions of their bodies, including the waist, back, and arms. Sleeveless tops and tight leggings were commonplace. A decorative Togruta sash was often woven around the hips, and high-heeled sandals were worn on the feet.
Males commonly wore loose-sleeved tops, pants that were baggy around the knees, and tall boots. Some wore tight belts fastened around their waists.
