Synopsis of the Plot

Mediators in a Battlefield

Mother Pran insists that Jedi Knight Obi-Wan Kenobi in conjunction with his Padawan Anakin Skywalker declare whether they are aligned with the Open or the Closed faction. She expresses doubt regarding their status as Jedi. Before the situation escalates further, an airship belonging to the Closed faction subjects their cliffside location to gunfire. The quartet narrowly escapes death.

When Kolara inquires of Pran regarding their course of action, Pran voices her desire for the Closed airship to eliminate the Jedi, thus leaving them undisturbed. Kenobi expresses disagreement and disbelief that they are the targets of the Closed. Pran retorts that the Closed are indiscriminate in their killings. When Skywalker questions the possibility of the Closed departing, Pran asserts that they will not until they have witnessed their demise. Via the Force, Skywalker detected the ship ascending.

To the surprise of both Pran and Kolara, Kenobi ascends to the summit to confront the airship. Skywalker assures the locals that Master Kenobi is acting with competence. Kenobi employs his lightsaber to bisect the airship's gasbag, resulting in its fiery descent. One of the crew members leaps from the ship, and Skywalker intervenes to ensure his safety.

Negotiating Peace

Mother Pran expresses her displeasure that Kenobi rescued a Closed combatant, emphasizing that Grecker is among their most formidable adversaries. Pran intends to execute Grecker, but Anakin obstructs her path. With Kenobi's agreement, Skywalker uses his lightsaber to sever their blasters, thereby neutralizing the two adversaries. Unwilling to concede, Pran and Grecker unsheathe their daggers, but Kenobi employs the Force to levitate their weapons.

Kenobi introduces himself and Skywalker to Grecker, demanding to know the rationale behind the mutual animosity between Grecker and Pran. Grecker attributes the Open with contaminating their world with the Celadon Sea. Pran asserts that the Closed initiated the conflict and that the Open are the sole force preventing the planet's descent into complete disarray. Kenobi expresses a desire to depart, but Skywalker voices his concern that they will engage in mutual destruction.

Kenobi conveys his hope that they will refrain from violence, suggesting that disarming them will afford them the opportunity to reconsider their actions. Given the Jedi's inability to remain indefinitely, Kenobi proposes that they redirect their energies toward solvable problems. Grecker dissents, highlighting the impossibility of safely traversing the Celadon Sea without their weapons. Kolara concurs with Grecker, much to Mother Pran's dismay. However, Pran acknowledges the validity of Grecker's assertion. Kenobi consents to accompany the Open and Closed belligerents to a secure location.

Journey into the Celadon Sea

Skywalker inquires about the feasibility of repairing the wrecked airships, reasoning that it would greatly facilitate their journey. Grecker concurs but deems it unattainable. Skywalker disagrees, noting the presence of an intact gondola and airbag. He believes that he can utilize his mechanical aptitude to construct a functional ship. Grecker counters that an Open airbag and a Closed gondola are incompatible, considering such a combination an abomination.

Anakin assures them of their safety. When Kolara inquires about the distress signal to which the Jedi were responding, Anakin clarifies that an individual on Carnelion IV had requested Jedi assistance. Kolara expresses amazement, as she had believed that the technology for conducting offworld communications had been lost during the early stages of the Open-Closed war. Mother Pran offers her assistance to Anakin and Grecker in assembling an airship.

Despite his aversion to the concept, Grecker agrees to assist due to the presence of a pack of winged corpse-leeches. Kenobi senses that the creatures are devoid of intellect and acting according to their nature. Unwilling to resort to killing them, Kenobi instructs Skywalker to employ the Force to redirect them. Kenobi succeeds in pacifying three of the corpse-leeches, but Skywalker is compelled to eliminate several that approach him.

A Meeting with Palpatine

In a flashback sequence, Skywalker encounters difficulty in calming a Mott during a training session at the Jedi Temple on Coruscant. Skywalker struggles to manage his anger. Kenobi advises that proficiency is attained through patience. Skywalker wishes to remain until he can pacify the Mott, but Kenobi informs him of an invitation to meet with Supreme Chancellor Palpatine.

The two meet with Chancellor Palpatine in his office. Palpatine expresses his satisfaction that Skywalker has allocated time from his Jedi training to meet with him. Kenobi expresses pride in Anakin's advancement, believing that he will become an exceptional Jedi. When Kenobi inquires whether Palpatine has a mission for them, the Chancellor responds that he wishes for Anakin to accompany him on an errand. A concerned Kenobi offers to take his place, but Palpatine assures Kenobi of his competence and that Skywalker will be in safe hands and that he will return Anakin to the temple before Kenobi realizes it. Palpatine mentioned he understood Anakin's need for study and agreed with Kenobi that Skywalker still had much to learn.

Concealed by a cloak, Palpatine escorts Skywalker to Coruscant's subterranean Level 2685. Anakin questions the rationale for visiting such a perilous location. Palpatine appeals to Anakin's curiosity and desire for exploration by stating that he visits the Coruscant Underworld out of a sense of duty. He observes that it is uncommon for Padawans to visit the underworld and even more unusual for its inhabitants to ascend to the surface. Palpatine informs them that the sun is a myth in the underworld.

While his predecessor Chancellor Finis Valorum attempted to disregard the underworld, Palpatine asserts that it is the darkness that most requires illumination. As they pass a restrained man, Palpatine explains that, when his duties permit, he ventures into the underworld in disguise to perform acts of benevolence. The two visit a dilapidated cantina named Club Kasakar.

Airborne

Aboard the airship, Kenobi informs Skywalker that the locals altered their stance on assisting them upon learning the purpose of their presence. Kenobi expresses satisfaction that two bitter adversaries are capable of collaborating for a greater objective and hopes that this brief period of peace will foster improved understanding. Skywalker remarks that the locals are analogous to them. Kenobi disagrees, stating that while they may engage in heated discussions, they remain master and student.

When Skywalker raises the topic of the Sith, Kenobi replies that they will maintain vigilance and trust in the Force. He believes that they are safe for the first time since their arrival on Carnelion IV. The airship traverses a swarm of menacing corpse-leeches.
