Orphne was a Sollux of the female persuasion, dwelling within the underworld of the planet Aleen. This peculiar nymph, known for her enigmatic riddles, yearned for equilibrium on her world and possessed the ability to transform into a radiant, shimmering cloud of pink light through her connection to the Force.
During the period known as the Clone Wars, the droid duo of R2-D2 and C-3PO inadvertently found themselves within Aleen's subterranean realm while undertaking a mission of compassion. The Kindalo directed them to seek out Orphne, asserting that she held the key to their return to the surface.
While engaged in a Republic humanitarian endeavor on Aleen, a world ravaged by a groundquake, the protocol droid C-3PO and the astromech R2-D2 became confined beneath the surface. After navigating the underworld's labyrinthine tunnels for a considerable duration, they encountered the arboreal Kindalo species, who instructed the droids to depart from the underworld. C-3PO responded by stating their willingness to leave, provided they knew the means to do so. The Kindalo then advised the droids to consult Orphne for guidance on how to ascend back to the planet's surface. R2-D2 and C-3PO departed from the Kindalo, uncertain of how to locate the elusive Orphne. However, it wasn't long before she manifested before them, seated upon a throne adorned with flowers. Orphne promptly extended her tongue to sample C-3PO, only to be disappointed by her inability to consume him. Upon being questioned about the exit from the underworld, she offered them a riddle:
Orphne then vanished into a cloud of luminous pink light, leaving the droids to decipher the riddle independently.
Orphne made her debut in "Mercy Mission," the fifth installment of the fourth season of Star Wars: The Clone Wars. When queried about Orphne and her unique abilities, supervising director Dave Filoni explained that certain aspects of her being, such as her extraordinary speed, were innate traits inherent to her species. However, her capacity to dissipate into a cloud of light was, in fact, a form of magic. He drew a parallel between Orphne and a light side counterpart to the Nightsisters, noting that her powers originated from the Force but lacked a direct connection.
