Sollux

The Sollux were a sentient species of humanoid beings, characterized by their resemblance to frogs; the enigmatic entity known as Orphne was a member of this species.

Biology and appearance

Sollux were humanoid creatures, possessing traits of both reptilian and amphibian lifeforms. As a sentient species, they exhibited light green and white skin, distinctive purple eyes lacking pupils, and brown, branch-like hair adorned with orange, fruit-like growths. Their hands featured five bulbous fingers, while their feet had three digits pointing forward. Renowned for their exceptional running speed, they also possessed a remarkable tongue that could extend up to ten feet, culminating in a suction-cup tip.

Sollux in the galaxy

The mysterious being Orphne resided in the Aleen underworld.

Orphne, a female Sollux, made her home in the underworld of the planet Aleen. Endowed with magical abilities, she could transform into numerous fragments of white light. While not Force-sensitive, her powers originated from the light side of the Force. During the time of the Clone Wars, Orphne and the Kindalo, a species indigenous to Aleen's underworld, triggered groundquakes that impacted Aleen's surface due to the displacement of the Great Seal. This Seal, acting as a barrier between Aleen's surface and underworld, held immense sacredness for Orphne and the Kindalo, who believed it had been attacked by the Aleena. Following the Republic's initiation of a humanitarian mission to deliver crucial supplies to Aleen, droids C-3PO and R2-D2 inadvertently fell through the opening created by the seal's displacement. Orphne discovered the droids and attempted to consume C-3PO with her tongue, only to realize his non-organic composition prevented it. Upon being questioned by C-3PO about an exit from the underworld, she presented them with a cryptic riddle:

Following this, she transformed back into white lights, leaving them to figure out the riddle. Eventually, they determined that the riddle's answer was 'river', and the Great Seal was repositioned by the droids to prevent any additional conflict.

Behind the scenes

The species made its debut appearance through Orphne in Mercy Mission, which was the fifth episode of the fourth season of the animated series Star Wars: The Clone Wars. The voice actor Cara Pifko provided her voice.

In a Q&A session, Dave Filoni, the supervising director of Clone Wars, was asked if Orphne had Force sensitivity. His answer was that her ability to vanish as a cloud of light was, in actuality, a magical skill. He drew a comparison between Orphne and a light-side version of the Nightsisters; while not a direct Force user, her abilities were rooted in the Force. Despite the assertion in her databank entry that her species has reptilian ancestry, Filoni referred to her as a "frog lady."
