Parrlay

Parrlay, a city located on the planet of Naboo, was home to the Human Parrlayan people. It sat to the south of both New Centrif and Vis, cities that all possessed transmitters enabling communication beyond the planet. Within Parrlay, one could find a range of residential structures, military installations, and defensive turrets. Notably, it was the birthplace of the Human Teckla Minnau. A grand arch marked the primary entrance, and to the northwest, outside this entrance, PKN-49 worker droids were employed in resource gathering.

During the events of 32 BBY, Parrlay became one of the first targets targeted by the Trade Federation during their Invasion of Naboo. Royal troopers, Tuskcat Troopers, V-19 landspeeders, and champion vehicles mounted a defense of the city. However, these defenders proved insufficient to halt the advance of the Trade Federation Droid Army under the command of OOM-9, who proceeded to pillage the city and obliterate its transmitter.

Description

On the planet of Naboo, there existed a city called Parrlay, populated by Parrlayans, a Human group of Naboo origin. Situated some distance from Theed, the planet's capital, it lay south of the cities Vis and New Centrif. A direct stone path connected New Centrif to Parrlay from the north. Near a small lake hidden within the forest to Parrlay's north, stood a revered statue crafted by the enigmatic Elders of Naboo. Trees enveloped much of the city, with a river flowing just beyond the eastern treeline. Many of Parrlay's buildings were adorned with yellow patterns and designs. While stone paths crisscrossed the city, many structures were built upon patches of grass.

The northwest area of Parrlay, outside its entrance

The city's northwest sector extended beyond its primary entrance. At the northernmost point, five prefab shelters rested on elevated ground. To their south, a carbon processing center served as storage for carbon harvested from nearby trees. Further south was a food processing center supporting two farms. Three PKN-49 worker droids gathered resources in this area. Two turrets guarded the main entrance to Parrlay, positioned on either side of the stone pathway. The eastern side of the entrance featured two prefab shelters, and the entrance itself was distinguished by a large archway mirroring the design of those found in Theed.

Beyond the entrance, two obelisk monuments stood on opposite sides of the path, encircled by flowers. A line of five residential buildings, a power core, and a troop center bordered the treeline on the northeastern side of the city. The city's center housed three residential buildings and several trees, with the westernmost building surrounded by flowers. The western side of the city featured a line of five residential buildings and a temple. One of the residential houses displayed orange stripes reminiscent of New Centrif's style. A medium wall enclosed the southern area of Parrlay, with a gate on the eastern side guarded by an exterior turret. The top corner behind the wall housed a transmitter for offworld and planetary communications. The transmitter rested on elevated ground and was surrounded by a light wall. Inside the wall, there was also a troop center, three prefab shelters, a command center, and a power core, which supported the surrounding buildings.

History

Teckla Minnau, a Human, was born in Parrlay to a middle-class merchant family. In 32 BBY, the Trade Federation launched an invasion of Naboo. Parrlay was among the Federation's initial targets due to its transmitter, which could have alerted Theed or the galactic capital, Coruscant, to the invasion. Nute Gunray, the Trade Federation Viceroy, tasked OOM-9, a B1-Series battle droid, with leading a small landing force to destroy the transmitters in Parrlay, New Centrif, and Vis. After leveling those cities with the assistance of forces commanded by the battle droid EEK-176, OOM-9's army advanced towards Parrlay, encountering and killing two separate groups of three Parrlayan soldiers along the way. At the time of the invasion, Parrlay's defenses consisted of nine royal troopers, six tuskcat troopers, four V-19 landspeeders, and two champions, a type of repulsorcraft.

The subjugation of Parrlay

Gunray dispatched a C-9979 landing craft to a clearing near Parrlay's entrance. As OOM-9's droids entered the city, two heavy beetle droids, two droidekas, two energy pummels, and three Armored Assault Tanks disembarked from the landing craft to assist in Parrlay's destruction. The droids battled through the city, eliminating the Naboo soldiers and destroying any labor droids they encountered. Upon reaching the walls surrounding the transmitter, OOM-9 positioned his infantry troops along the wall while the beetle droids burned through it. More Naboo troopers continued to emerge from the troop center inside the walls, only to be gunned down by the battle droids. After breaching the wall, the beetle droids proceeded to destroy the transmitter. With the city razed, Gunray reported the subjugation of Parrlay to Darth Sidious, the Sith Lord who secretly orchestrated the invasion. The viceroy declared that the city's destruction marked only the beginning of the invasion.

Behind the scenes

Parrlay made its debut in Prima Games' strategy guide penned by Steven L. Kent—released on November 7, 2001—for the LucasArts video game Star Wars: Galactic Battlegrounds, which was released on November 11, 2001. Within the game, destroying the transmitter in Parrlay serves as the final objective in the first level of the Trade Federation campaign, entitled "Beachhead." The strategy guide inaccurately identified the target of the level as destroying spaceports rather than transmitters. The guide also cautioned players against diverting their attention to destroying buildings in Parrlay, a mistake that could lead to defeat.

On the easy difficulty setting, Parrlay's defenses are reduced by three troopers and two V-19 landspeeders, the turret closest to the transmitter is absent, and royal troopers do not spawn from the southern troop center. On the moderate difficulty, the turret and landspeeders are present, and troops spawn from the troop center. An unused audio file within the game features a Naboo trooper urgently stating that Parrlay must be warned of the approaching invaders. In the original game version, mounted troopers rode kaadu, which were later replaced by tusk cats in the 2002 expansion Clone Campaigns.
