Subjugation of Parrlay

The Parrlay conquest, alternatively known as the Parrlay destruction, marked one of the initial conflicts during the Trade Federation's Invasion of Naboo. In the year 32 BBY, the Trade Federation initiated a blockade of the planet as a form of protest against the Galactic Republic's taxation of Free Trade Zones. Prior to a full-blown planetary invasion, Trade Federation Viceroy Nute Gunray dispatched a Droid Army force, under the command of the B1-Series battle droid OOM-9, with the mission of neutralizing the Naboo's ability to communicate beyond their world.

OOM-9 initially targeted the city of New Centrif, but after determining its defenses were too strong, he shifted his focus to the nearby city of Vis. With reinforcements led by the droid EEK-176, the battle droids obliterated Vis, including its transmitter. Subsequently, the augmented droid force advanced on New Centrif, destroying its transmitter as well. The droids then set their sights on Parrlay, the location of the last transmitter, and with further reinforcements from Gunray, they successfully demolished the Parrlayan transmitter. This destruction of communication capabilities was immediately detected in Theed, the capital of Naboo, where a conversation between Queen Amidala and the offworld Senator Palpatine was abruptly interrupted.

Background

In the year 32 BBY, the Trade Federation established a blockade around the planet of Naboo in response to Senate Resolution BR-0371, a ruling by the Galactic Senate that imposed a tariff on Free Trade Zones. This blockade was masterminded by the Dark Lord of the Sith Darth Sidious, who was publicly known as Senator Palpatine of Naboo. As preparation for an invasion, the Trade Federation engaged in several secret operations to disrupt Naboo's communications, including the disabling of a sensor array near the city of Kwilaan, facilitating the undetected placement of jamming satellites. Following a failed ambush targeting Jedi ambassadors dispatched to resolve the blockade, Sidious instructed Trade Federation Viceroy Nute Gunray to begin the deployment of the Federation's Droid Army onto the planet. The Sith Lord assigned the Trade Federation two key objectives: first, to neutralize Naboo's ability to communicate with the Senate, and second, to capture Queen Amidala and coerce her into signing a surrender treaty.

OOM-9 with his initial forces

After a tense transmission exchange with Amidala, Rune Haako, Gunray's legal advisor, questioned whether the queen suspected an attack. Gunray responded that he was uncertain, but emphasized the urgency of disrupting the Naboo's ability to report the invasion to the Galactic Republic capital planet of Coruscant. Consequently, Gunray entrusted B1-Series battle droid OOM-9 with the mission of destroying three transmitters located in the Naboo cities of New Centrif, Vis, and Parrlay. The droid landed north of New Centrif aboard a C-9979 landing craft with a force consisting of his personal Heavy Armored Assault Tank, eight B1-Series battle droids, four heavy beetle droids, and two Single Trooper Aerial Platforms.

The Conquest

Initially, the Droid Army approached New Centrif, but OOM-9 determined that the city was too heavily defended and would require additional forces for a successful attack. He redirected his battle droids to Vis, situated a short distance east of New Centrif. Upon their arrival, Gunray dispatched another force commanded by the B1 battle droid EEK-176, which included three droidekas, four heavy beetle droids, and four B1 battle droids. EEK-176's forces flanked Vis from the south, while OOM-9's forces attacked from the west. The droids killed the Royal Naboo Security Forces present, which included four royal troopers, nine trooper recruits, a V-19 landspeeder, and four Tuskcat Troopers. Following this, they destroyed the remainder of the city and its transmitter, with EEK-176 announcing the capture of Vis.

New Centrif under attack

Next, OOM-9 led the Droid Army toward New Centrif, accessing it through its southern entrance, which was less fortified than the north. On their way into the city, the Federation force eliminated a group consisting of three trooper recruits and one royal trooper. Once inside, they eliminated five PKN-49 worker droids, who were gathering nova crystals and working as farmers, along with their defenders. Subsequently, the majority of New Centrif's population, including ten troopers, three trooper recruits, six Tuskcat Troopers, and three V-19 landspeeders, engaged the invaders. OOM-9 held his beetle droids in reserve while his forces gunned down the Naboo, suffering minimal losses. Afterwards, OOM-9 dispatched his droids further into the city to eliminate any remaining resistance and deployed the beetle droids to burn New Centrif and its transmitter to the ground. EEK-176 then repeated the declaration of victory.

En route to the last transmitter, the droids encountered and eliminated two separate groups of three Parrlayan royal troopers. As OOM-9's army entered Parrlay, Gunray dispatched another landing craft to reinforce the droids from the north: two heavy beetle droids, two droidekas, two energy pummels, and three Armored Assault Tanks. The combined droid forces pushed through Parrlay's defenders, including ten royal troopers, seven Tuskcat Troopers, four V-19 landspeeders, and two champion repulsorcraft. Eventually, they reached the walled area of Parrlay that housed the transmitter. A troop center was situated behind the wall, from which royal troopers began to emerge. OOM-9 positioned his battle droids along the wall to fire upon the troopers, while his beetle droids burned through the wall and destroyed the transmitter, completing the destruction of Parrlay.

Consequences

A meeting between Palpatine and the Royal Naboo Advisory was disrupted by the Trade Federation.

The destruction of the transmitters enabled the Trade Federation to proceed with the invasion without alerting the Galactic Republic. Gunray informed Sidious of the subjugation of Parrlay, acknowledging it as merely the beginning of the invasion. At the time of the communications disruption, Queen Amidala and the Naboo Royal Advisory Council were in Naboo's capital, Theed, participating in a holographic meeting with Palpatine, who was offworld. The unexpected interruption of Palpatine's hologram led Captain Quarsh Panaka of the Royal Naboo Security Forces to suspect that the Trade Federation was jamming their communications, while Governor Sio Bibble concluded that an invasion had commenced. OOM-9 continued to conquer the Naboo cities of Harte Secur and Spinnaker, and captured Theed the morning after the Army's landing. The Royal Advisory Council peacefully surrendered to the Trade Federation, at which point Bibble criticized Gunray for interrupting their communications with Palpatine while discussions were still ongoing in the Senate.

During the Fall of Theed, the Jedi ambassadors Qui-Gon Jinn and Obi-Wan Kenobi infiltrated Theed to rescue Amidala from her droid captors, intending to contact the Republic and report the invasion. When strategizing with the queen's entourage, Panaka confirmed that their communications remained disrupted, leading the Jedi to decide on acquiring transportation offworld so that Amidala could inform the Galactic Senate of Naboo's plight. OOM-9 received credit for destroying the communications capabilities of New Centrif and Vis, a fact that later reached Darth Maul, Sidious's Sith apprentice. In an interview recorded in the Royal Archives of Naboo, Vol. 2453, Royal Naboo Security Forces veteran Pars Varqom cited the loss of communications as the event that marked the beginning of the invasion.

Behind the Curtains

The subjugation of Parrlay was portrayed in the first level of the Trade Federation campaign in Star Wars: Galactic Battlegrounds.

The disruption of Naboo's communications was created for the story of the prequel trilogy film Star Wars: Episode I The Phantom Menace, written and directed by George Lucas. This event was first mentioned in the film's novelization by Terry Brooks, released on April 21, 1999, before the film's premiere on May 19 of the same year. In the 2001 LucasArts video game Star Wars: Galactic Battlegrounds, the events surrounding the disruption were depicted as a battle in the first level of the Trade Federation campaign, titled "Beachhead." The battle's name was revealed in the introductory cutscene of the subsequent level, "Behind the Lines." Unused audio files from the game feature an attack by the droid OOM-14 on the city of Pontel and a Naboo trooper announcing the need to warn Parrlay about the impending attack. The accompanying strategy guide by Steven L. Kent details several differences in the subjugation's portrayal compared to the final game. It identifies spaceports, rather than transmitters, as the targets in each city. The guide also indicates that the player would receive two droidekas when attacking Vis, whereas the game actually provides three.

In the original version of Galactic Battlegrounds, the Naboo mounted troopers rode kaadu; these were replaced with tusk cats in the 2002 expansion Clone Campaigns. The number of enemy units encountered by the player in Galactic Battlegrounds varies based on the difficulty setting. In Vis, the four royal troopers and the V-19 landspeeder are only present on the hard difficulty level. The turrets at the entrance to New Centrif are absent on the easy difficulty level, while three royal troopers and two landspeeders are added on the hard difficulty level. On easy mode in Parrlay, there are three fewer troopers, two fewer V-19 landspeeders, and one fewer turret, and royal troopers do not emerge from the southern troop center. All of these units, except for the initial three troopers, appear on medium and hard difficulty levels. This article adheres to the units depicted on the hard difficulty level.
