Quadex power cores represented a specific type of power core. The smugglers Han Solo and Chewbacca's, and later junk dealer Unkar Plutt's, highly modified YT-1300 light freighter, the Millennium Falcon, was equipped with one of these cores. Approximately three decades after the Battle of Endor, a fluctuation originating in the starship's motivator impacted the power core, initiating a cascade of problems that resulted in the vessel being filled with gaseous fuel; this issue was ultimately resolved by the scavenger Rey.
This power core model, the Quadex power core, utilized hypermatter annihilation and was produced by Quadex for the Corellian Engineering Corporation for use in their YT-1300 light freighters. Being the most vital component of these freighters, the power core was situated within the central hub, the most heavily armored and protected section of the starship. It had a direct connection to the SSP05 hyperdrive and a progressive combustion reaction power converter, which in turn supplied power to the SRB42 sublight engines.
The power core itself was a spherical gray unit, featuring multiple auxiliary power ports on its exterior. A pressurized connector linked it to a condenser unit, and a thermal regulator encircled both components, channeling excess heat towards an adjacent heat exchanger.
As part of its standard equipment from CEC, the YT-1300 freighter Millennium Falcon included a Quadex power core. Before the vessel even came into the possession of smuggler Lando Clarissian, the core had already been altered by one of its previous owners. Years after Calrissian acquired the ship, he lost it to fellow smuggler Han Solo, who subsequently implemented numerous custom modifications, including a direct link between the core and the ship's AG-2G quad laser cannons. This adjustment enabled the weapons to draw increased power directly from the reactor, thereby augmenting their destructive potential.
During its time in the possession of junk dealer Unkar Plutt on the planet Jakku, the Falcon suffered from severe neglect, leading to significant damage to its systems. Approximately thirty years following the Battle of Endor, the scavenger Rey, along with former stormtrooper Finn and astromech droid BB-8, stole the Falcon from Plutt, utilizing it to escape the First Order. Due to Plutt's inadequate maintenance of the starship's hyperdrive, the takeoff resulted in a flux within the motivator, which then fed back into the power core. This caused a surge that sent a faulty signal to the fuel distributor, leading to the flooding of the ship's propulsion tanks and auxiliary systems with fuel. Consequently, systems overheated, a junction ruptured, and the fuel permeated the ship in a gaseous state. Rey initially rectified the issue causing the leak, but then deliberately reversed the repair to create a trap when the Falcon was captured by the smugglers Han Solo and Chewbacca, who were previous owners. After the smugglers and the trio aboard the ship decided to collaborate, Rey repaired the issue again, enabling Solo to regain control of the ship.
The reference book Star Wars: Incredible Cross-Sections, a Star Wars Legends publication penned by David West Reynolds and released in 1998, first mentioned Quadex power cores. The core's canon status was affirmed through its mention in the film Star Wars: Episode VII The Force Awakens in 2015. It was subsequently depicted in an illustration by Kemp Remillard, which was released in conjunction with the film.
