Zag

RC-2088, also known as Zag, served as a sergeant and Clone commando within an unidentified team of clone commandos. Following the battlefield deaths of his original squad, he was transferred to Aiwha Squad.

Biography

During the thick of the Clone Wars, RC-2088's unit was tasked with protecting Lorca Oviedo as he traveled to a meeting on Aviles Prime. They accompanied him aboard their CR25 troop carrier. Oviedo, a notable industrialist loyal to the Confederacy of Independent Systems, had secured a contract to manufacture and supply weaponry for the Grand Army of the Republic. This arrangement was part of a scheme to reveal troop strength and deployment details to Wat Tambor.

On the return journey from Aviles Prime, Oviedo's Republic Cruiser reported a critical failure in its life support systems. This forced both the cruiser and its clone escort to exit hyperspace. They emerged near Asturias, a disused factory moon, with the intention of repairing Oviedo's vessel. However, immediately upon exiting hyperspace, a droid control ship launched an assault, inflicting severe damage on both ships and causing them to crash-land on Asturias. Of the eighteen clones aboard the CR25, only seven survived. Resolving to continue their assignment, they proceeded toward the wreckage of Oviedo's ship. There, they uncovered a startling truth: the ship was undamaged, had not crashed, and its life support systems had never malfunctioned. The crew had been murdered, and the clones discovered footprints belonging to B1-series battle droids, along with those of a lone human, leading away from the ship.

Following the tracks, they found Oviedo communicating with Wat Tambor via hologram. The Separatist attack had been orchestrated to create the impression that Oviedo had not betrayed the Republic, but had instead been captured. Believing the clones to be dead, the commandos seized the opportunity to surprise and destroy the B1 droids, capturing Oviedo. They then had to fight their way back to Oviedo's shuttle, battling waves of B1 droids, B2 super battle droids, Droidekas, and Vulture droids, suffering casualties along the way. During one attack, RC-2088's helmet was dislodged, resulting in severe facial scarring, but he successfully secured Oviedo aboard the ship and escaped to Coruscant. Tragically, Oviedo died under mysterious circumstances after landing.

Subsequently, RC-2088 briefed Jedi Master Yoda and Mace Windu on the mission's outcome. They praised his efforts and assured him that the sacrifice of his fellow clones would be remembered. After he departed, Yoda expressed concerns that the loyalty of RC-2088 and all clones might not always lie with the Jedi.

Following these events, 2088 was assigned to Aiwha Squad and fought in the Battle of Garqi during 19 BBY. After clones inadvertently destroyed a Garqian farmhouse, RC-2088 and other clones were dispatched to rescue any survivors. His squad discovered a young boy named Evan. Upon returning the boy to the Republic outpost, Jedi Master Traavis commended the clones for their rescue and informed them of the death of General Grievous, indicating the war's end was near. Abruptly, the clones received Order 66 and executed Traavis, confirming Yoda's fears about the clones' divided loyalties.

Equipment

Zag typically wore Katarn-class commando armor. However, he occasionally wore a variation of the cupid clone trooper armor, featuring white gauntlets, leg armor, and chest armor, along with green forearm armor, shoulder armor, waist armor, and shin armor. This variant also included a white and green helmet with a yellow visor, and dark, wing-like decorations extending from the backpack.

Behind the scenes

"Honor Bound" initially identified this clone as "R.C. Sergeant Theta Twenty-eight-eight." The Complete Star Wars Encyclopedia later clarified the clone's designation as "RC-2088," while also confirming him as the clone "Zag" featured in Orders.

The Star Wars Tales issue containing Honor Bound was re-released in January 2008 as part of the Action Figure Comic Packs series. This pack included two action figures: a Super Battle Droid and an unnamed Republic Commando, who could potentially be RC-2088.
